| I have only entered one competition, and this weekend I printed out a prospectus for another show, another try. I had to call for clarification on the instructions that the painting must wrap on a gallery canvas. In the conversation I was told that the painting image had to extend to the sides; ie, the sides couldn't just be painted a solid color. Is this common? I don't usually do this but maybe I need to. Also, do shows generally want paintings done on a gallery canvas? Depending upon the subject, I choose a gallery or smaller canvas width. What is your experience? |

Hi, Kim, My experiece, at least with gallery canvas, is that they want uniformity in the work displayed. No frames so that it is only the work in view and nothing to distract from it. Less space taken and the same type of hanger used for every piece. As far as 'wrapping' the painting, I don't know... Mike |

I guess I expected you to read my mind. I forgot to mention that they did want the pieces framed in a typical gallery frame. Because of this, I thought it was strange.

Very strange way of saying that they did not want paintings done on anything but stretched canvas, i.e. no canvas board, masonite, cardboard etc. Sure disqualifies a lot of old masters that survive because they were painted on wood panels. |
