Hello!

I created a painting via PhotoShop and Illustrator and had it printed on a large canvas (56” x 56”) then stretched over a frame.

I would like to paint over the image with oil paint (sort of paint by numbers) to give the canvas texture.

Using professional oils from an art store would be very expensive (I have already spent over $500 printing and framing this image).

Would anyone have any recommendations for an inexpensive way to find large quantities of oil paint?

I was thinking of taking my pantone swatches to a hardware store; have them match the colors; and let the oil paint thicken by leaving the lids off for a time.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you!
Jeff

Jeff,

I'm hesitant to give you advice on this project because I don't know anything about what canvas and ink were used in printing the giclee. Giclee canvas can either be water resistant or can have a gelatin-based coating on it to receive the inks. Painting over the surface with either oil or water-based paints can interact with the inks and coating. I'd recommend contacting the printer, if you don't already know, and ask them about the materials they used and what their recommendations might be about applying paints over the top of the printed surface. Also ask what, if any, protective coatings were applied to the canvas.

If your goal is simply to add texture, and assuming that water-resistant canvas and inks were used, I have seen good results obtained by applying acrylic gel medium over the surface with a soft brush to add texture and brush strokes. It's a lot less expensive than oil paints. If you do actually want to vary the color by applying paint, then I'd recommend sticking with artists' quality paints instead of house paints. You may want to consider acrylics instead of oils both because of cost and because of a better chance of getting a good bond with the surface of the printed canvas. Whatever you do, given the expense you've already incurred, I'd recommend spending a few dollars more in having the same printer make you a couple of small proofs on the same canvas and with the same finish applied so you can practice on them before taking on the final work.

Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.

thank you SO much. that's brilliant and i don't have to worry about painting in the lines : )

i have contacted the printer asking if the colors will bleed using an acrylic gel and which consistency gel they would recommend
