Hey there, I'm no serious artist but I do draw often as a hobby. My high school art teacher taught me a technique that I still use, but I can't remember what it's called. I always sound like a cretin trying to explain it to people, so I was hoping someone here might know the actual name for it. You put your reference picture in front of your canvas and then remove it, making a small mark at some specific point. After repeating this many, many times, you basically play connect-the-dots. I hope somebody can figure out what I'm trying to convey. Any bells ringing? |

That is an atelier technique - the old masters used this technique to create very very very accurate drawings.
You might want to consider attending an atelier workship to get a handle on how to draw this way professionally.

| Hi, pectacon!
Sounds like you're serious enough with your "hobby" in that you
want to learn more. You described your "connect the dots",
atal-whatever technique, and I'm anxious to try it in my
more sustained pencil drawing! |
