10/10/2007 10:03 PM Alert

I am doing a series of paintings to be used as cards. I normally work in Alkyd on canvas, but was thinking of doing these in acrylic on paper because they are a very specific subject (a certain breed of dog, not very common) and the goal is the cards, not paintings. I need to do 6 different pieces, have some paints, thought it would be good to try something new. Might even draw with india ink & do transparent washes over....

Does anyone have any helpful hints?

Thanks!

Marianne

Use a watercolour technique on paper with acrylics, not thick.

I logged in to ask this question and saw this thread on Acrylic on paper - so here goes.....what kind of paper do I want to use with acrylics?
I am trying different ideas and trying to learn about conveying light in my paintings and I think paper would be cheaper to experiment with than canvas...

well watercolor paper would be a first option i think...but there is a wide wide range of wc papers so it depends on what your looking for....heavy textured to nearly none...yanno? experimenting with all types ya can get your hands on would be the first step..~wink~

I always work in acrylic on water color paper or illustration board. It is great with ink! Go for it and most of all work freely with gusto! Judy

I work with acrylycs on paper sometimes. Depending on painting style and tachnique, if you are of the detail-and-fine-line persuasion - you might try acrylics for overall and Winsor/Newton Designer Gouache for all detail. Definitely cuts down on the frustration of trying to get that effect with acrylics alone. These two paints are compatible, can be intermixed. Gouache can be isolated with Krylon Kamar- to prevent redesolving, should you want to paint over it or add a wash/glaze or pattern.

Hi Marianne, There is a variety of sufaces that are really wonderful to use with acrylics.... that said  choose one that fits the "final" purpose of the art, if the cards are ACEOs you should use a firm stock or have canvas paper mounted on a backer board. I am researching trading and ACEO cards and see that most acrylic artist are using heavy weight acrylic paper... feels more like a textured-coated watercolor paper, but very firm. This cuts well and can be mounted down (rolling drafting tape to the back and attaching it to table surface or a board) to make it easier to work on. Make sure you allow the work to dry thoroughly especially if you have any heavy layering because I have had the miss fortune of placing work under a plastic protector and the acrylic stuck to the surface, patience isn't one of my virtues, I guess. Hope the work turns out like you desire and you enjoyed the process! Live creatively, Smurfette  www.suzetteeast.com

I used 300# watercolor paper and was very pleased.  Depends if you are going to mail the cards or use them for other purposes.
