hi,
I've been drawing large-scale charcoal peices that tend to be very dark. The problem is, i've been doing them in my kitchen and the charcoal dust spreads and covers EVERYTHING. I want to be able to achieve the same deep blacks without the mess. I also want to be able to keep the whole thing workable. Another problem is that no matter how many layers of fixatif I spray, the stuff still comes off. I don't want to paint. Any ideas as to a suitable drawing medium?

Have you tried a conte crayon in black? I use the black in my charcoal drawings and I really like the result. They also come in a few gradations. You will still get some powder, but not near as much as charcoal.

cp cp cp!.....the black is the blackest...and they have all ranges of values in greys..not even mentioning the color

also there is a pencil by generals called, sketch and wash? thats very responsive, and sticks well to the paper, and you can create your values using a damp brush...
