Specifically I'm looking for tips on how to add printed material like a postcard or similar to a painting. I'm using acrylics. Do I simply apply it with some kind of clear spray laquer ?  Any tips are welcome

Hi!

It depends on how much of the item you want to be visible in your finished work. If you want to partially obscure it I often use regular acrylic paint. I work with the heavy bodied paint so this works well. If you want it to be more visible try using acrylic matte or gloss medium depending on the finish you want. Both work well and you can also use those mediums to create image transfers from photocopies which add fun elements to a work.

I have never used a spray varnish or glue to attatch items to a work - when I have worked with spray adhesive I find i have to be really careful with it because if you overspray the area that you mean to adhere the item to the overspray stays tacky.

Hope this helps

do you mean I would get an acrylic paint that is transparent? Hope I dont sound nuts but I havent seen that and maybe that's not what you mean. So I have a headline from a newspaper or whatever and it will just be held in place by painting over the edges or a transparent paint right over the whole thing?

Acrylic Matte/gloss medium isn't exactly clear acrylic paint. Its thinner generally. Its usually a milky white colour in the bottle and dries clear. Look it up on dickblick.com or at your local art store. I would paint over the whole thing to secure it. But be aware that the newsprint might smear when the medium gets put on it. Test it on a scrap of newsprint first to see if it runs at all. Good luck!

thanks very much for your input Laura. I found some transparent, rather thin, glue that with one easy application will do the job well. It has a matte finnish. Your right about the news print smearing though. I will have to be carefull what I use. pictures, postcards etc seem to work well.

one thing about spray adhesive- it can add interesting texture. i have also used omni gel. it depends on what you want as a finished product. i glue photo paper and seeds on canvas and glaze with alkyds. i kind of like some of the effects the overspray of the spray gives. i've never had a problem with it drying. the texture gives the glazes a nice place to settle. i can then rub paint off to show deeper layers or goop it on to catch the ridges. here's an example- doesn't show the texture very well, but you'll get the idea-
