I have only begun to seriously work my art skills in painting and drawing in past few years and practices in charcoals, pastels, graphite include interaction with papers and fixatives.  Working recently with colored Canson papers of small or large sizes using only white charcoal pencil and conte, in specific darker ones like red or black, and to preserve it in the end, used a temp. fixative.  I don't like what it does to the white: mottling, fading.  Any suggestions?  Is it the paper choices or the medium itself?

i use white charcoal with graphite, but never tend to ~fix~ cause i hate what it does to it..i am just a bit careful of the piece and frame it so the paper doesnt touch the inside of the glass, some of the floating mats/frames work wonderfully for this...

have ya tried maybe using a white or cream or light cps? {colored pencil} because its waxy base? it isnt like a fine powder the way charcoal can be...and never flakes off the paper..~wink~

I pretty much agree with you on using fixative sparingly.  If you do use it, make sure you don't saturate the medium.  Just like any spray paint, it is better to spray several very light coats rather than one heavy one.  I have had good luck with this method when I feel the need.  Good Luck!  jp
