Or what ever its called on the outside of the orange once the peel is removed? What color do you paint it when its in shadow-I tried to paint it a bluish color and my wife said it looked like a mouldy orange.  Any suggestions?

  Thanks Tom

It depends on a couple of different things, the colour of the light source (warm or cool), and weather the white stuff (pith) is completely in shadow or if it is reflected light. Shadow is also effected by any objects around it if the colour of those objects is bouncing into the shadows . Shadows are not any one colour, they are a blening of colour an the light that is boucing aroun in them. Any chance you can post a picture of the painting or the still life you have set up? If not, here's a few things that may help you out:

1. If painting indoors with cool light, your shadows, reflected light and the halftones will have a warm cast to them. If you have warm light, then your shadows, etc., will have a cool undertone.

2. Be sure to get the value of the shadows right, the stronger the light, the stronger the shadows. value is critical in depicting believable shadow.

3. If your shadow is really dark, near black, be sure to paint them thinly (thick light, thin shadows is a good rule)

Hi,
I read your question about a week ago and I knew somewhere in all my art books, magazines and articles that I had an answer. I found it in a 1974 Palette Talk magazine. I'll directly quote for you.
THE PULP OF THE ORANGES. Light tones: Cadmium Orange and Cadmium Yellow Light with a bit of white. Darker tones: Cadmium Orange with a bit of Burnt Sienna.
The still life is of oranges cut in half. Hope this helps.
