Hi All,

I am a fairly new painter living on the Great Lakes. Local scenes sell fairly well for me. I paint sailboats quite a bit and have a lousy time with the lines. I use the script liner and tried other methods when the oil or acrylic painting is dry BUT they always look too thick. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Try using a bridge to make your lines. You can look on my website under
"blog" to see a picture of a bridge. If you use a bridge, you can actually use a
paint brush and it works. There is also a new product called a Mahl Bridge. I saw
it advertised in the new "Artists Magazine".

There are oil markers that you can use on oil paintings along with the bridge if you don't want
to use the brush. Thus far, I have used a bridge that I made myself.

PS

I actually make a better straight line with a #6 bright Artisan flat brush using the thin part of the
brush to make the line. It holds more paint and runs the line longer before getting too light.

I hope this helps.

Don't know which medi you're talking about. If you tell me I might be able to help you.

And don't forget to go to Mackinac Island sometime. It's beautiful there, wish I could have stayed longer.

I use both oil and acrylic, I have trouble making nice thin lines with both.

I would try toothpicks. Problem is the lines won't be sweeping nbecause you'll hafta reload a lot.

Only other methods I can think of inolve mixed media.

I've tried with a script brush and I have waited until the oil dried and tried markers, with acrylics I've tried coloured pencils and the markers work the best so far on these. The ropes just look too big and obvious all the time.

Sakura (same guys who sell the micron pens) sells Pen-touch markers (though I think they're closer to pens) with opaque white ink. It has a fine bullet tip.

ArtRiver,

I havent done this myself, but watched a artist give a demo , and for the telephone wire (which would be like sailboat wire) I guess.  He used the side of his palatte knife and it looked great.  good luck.
