I am curious about a way to get a consistent repetative pattern into the background of oil paitings.  Has anyone ever tried using stencils? It would be nice to create & use a unique design....but I have no idea if this would work with oils....ALso I have never cut my own stencils and dont know what kind of material to use....any advise is appreciated!

HI - remember from long ago, when I used to do display decorating in Europe, to make some extra money: I cut the forms into some fairly heavy paper with an exacto knife and covered them with shellac two or three times. I used a blunt-cut round bristle brush to apply the paint. I cut several identical stencils when I had to cover a larger area, because they do wear out after a while. Do you underpaint with acrylics? Maybe you could stencil with acrylics - I would imagine that that paint would lend itself to an easier less messy application Good luck!
