I need a durable easel for field work. My painting excursions are usually very short because I end up paining or sketching on my lap, because I do not have a field easel. The problem is that I pretty much live in a swamp! Seriously, I live in FL and the terrain is swampy- consisting of brackish estuaries, mangrove islands, or everglades swamp.  Plus it  rains frequently, and there is little to no warning- the sky just opens up. I have never had a field easel or "french" easel, so I don't know what I am missing, but I am getting too old to hunch over a sketchbook for hours on end. I am afraid to just buy something sight unseen from the internet (there are no serious art stores with easel displays near me).  I need durable. I need something with parts that are easily manipulated- not springy things or wingnuts that fall off in predawn hours while I am trying to set up in the dark and simultaneously slap mosquitoes before they carry me away.  I need something that will accommodate pastel or oil supports, and watercolor on panel or canvas. I need something with non ferrous hardware, or at least hi quality stainless steel so it wont rust and sieze up from salt water. I need a rugged heavy duty workhorse, not a society easel.

Any suggestions?

I would definitely advise against using a French easel. They are so difficult to get up and down in a hurry and I find mine to be very "unstable". You can buy an easy set-up from www.Sun-EdenArtistsGear.com. Their easel easily attaches to a regular camera tripod. I love mine. Also, if you use pastels, Jim Markle has designed and sells a great pastel box/easel combination that also attaches to a camera tripod. Easy on-easy off! For a brochure, e-mail jimmarklepasteleaselbox@yahoo.com or call (616) 458-8559. He has an ad in the Pastel Journal. Hope this helps you. Gene

Two easels come to mind. A Soltek (expensive) and an Anderson (cheaper). I bought the Anderson. Both have aluminum legs and an area to put paints or pastels. You can set up and close up pretty rapidly and there are no drawers (like a french easel) to jam. Look them up on Dick Blick or go directly to the individual sites.

I leave my Anderson easel in my car all the time, filled with enough pastels for field studies or plein air painting. By taking out the foam inserts from Sennelier pastel boxes, I lined the inside tray with them and put in close to 75 different colors and values by breaking sticks into thirds. I then glued flat pieces of foam to the inside cover. Room for brush, pastel pencils, and eraser, too. I can close it up and nothing moves. Good for airline rides as well.
