I have some oil paintings that I varnished with Damar varnish or a spray varnish. Does anyone know if you can repaint over it with oils?

i suppose you can paint over it IF you sand it down and remove most of the varnish. it's a touchy task if you've painted originally on canvas, much easier if on a hard board. BUT, simply painting over the varnish will NOT WORK.

you don't need to remove all the varnish, just need to dull/scratch the surface with 2/0 steel wool. Then, technically you need to apply 123 bonding primer which will accept oil or latex paints on that. Now I only deal with wood, so if you are dealing with canvas and are trying to do some touch ups on your painting, I would say it's too late now. If you want to paint over some kitchen cabinets..then you'd be in great shape.

I have used varnish glazes in the past, which is the same thing, once the varnish is dry I put on the next glaze, and paint on top for highlights. These painting are years old and have not cracked, flaked or anything like that. I now use Liquin for a glazing medium.

I am not talking about thick coats of varnish. About the same consistency or maybe a little more than a spray varnish, very thin. If you have a thick coat of varnish on painting, that is different.
