i am painting waterlilies in a pond. i have painted the lilies and the leaves okay. i am having trouble painting the background, ( which is the water in the pond ).

the water is a medium indigo, the darkest value of the painting. i have failed to paint it smooth & evenly. it is blotchy.

how can i paint the water smooth & even?

Hi there! My suggestion is this: Wet the entire area to be painted with clear water and let dry slightly until the shine is there, but not sopping wet. "Float" some indigo/Ultra Blue, a good green like sap, maybe even some pink/orange if your reflecting some interesting sky in and around the area that's wet- let it bleed together by helping it along alittle with your brush. If the area is too large to deal with- wet smaller sections(ending at a convenient place, like a lily leaf) and move around your paper in a similar way. Areas around each pad may be darker and wash the color out to the edge to a lighter shade. Works for me! Susie
