I think they should be out of the frame. I always take mine outside and put them on a south wall, if possible with no shadows or bright light shining on them. Sometimes I lay them down on the porch floor. Then, using a digital camera I zoom in to include as much of the painting as I can get. If there is anything beside the painting showing in the view finder, (sometimes the width or the length do not match what I will get on my camera), I can always crop this later on my computer. I take many shots in order to get exactly what I want. My biggest aim is to match the colors of the original painting and to make sure I get the shot "straight-on. I mostly do pastels so I don't have to worry about sheen as an oil painter would have to. With pastels you sometimes get a look of tiny white dots showing through the paint. I've even noticed this in some of the art magazines and in some books by pastelists. I think a way to avoid some of this would be to use a colored paper to start out with. Good luck............Gene

I recently was able to sit in on a jurying process for an art club. It was a real privilege and I both enjoyed the experience and learned from it. (See the last entry in "Dealing With Rejection" in this Tech Talk Section). The jurors viewed all of the slides that were sent in for consideration. Several of them were obviously taken by the artist who apparently hadn't read some of the information available both in magazines and on line about how best to take photos of your artwork.
All of the jurors commented that this made it much more difficult to make a good decision based on the art because the photo got in the way.

Related to frame or no frame.... Examples of artwork both framed and not framed were submitted. That didn't seem to affect the jurors as much as the quality of the artwork and the quality of the photo of the artwork, but I know most professionals photograph the work without the frame.

Scott Burdick has a whole video about photographing your artwork and there's a little description on a "how to" section of the Masterpiece Artist Canvas website.

Sometimes we paint to see more clearly or to feel more deeply.
