I've applied a retouch varnish to an oil painting before my last session of work on it. The painting is now finished, however I've noticed under raked lighting areas where the retouch has been applied and worse still there are runs! I normally use 2 coats of final varnish 9 months after completion. Will the final varnish hide the runs and if not what is the best way to remedy this problem? Thanks for all comments. Stan.

Hi Stan. I am assumming that you are brushing the varnish on rather then using a spray varnish. I am not an expert with paintings but as for handling varnish. Whether it is floors furnature or paints. I find it goes on smoother and handles better if the vanish is warmed. You may warm it by placing the can in hot water for a bit. Sanding lighting with a fine sand paper may help to rid of the runs. After sanding wipe clean with a damp cloth or tac cloth. Handle varnish quickly and do as little strokes as possible. Better to apply several thin coats then one thick one.
These are just my thoughts on varnish and it is something that I would do to try and correct the problem. I am not sure if it is the right thing for your oil painting. The finial coat will not hide the runs I don't think.
Good luck. I hope you find something that works.
