| First, let me say thank you Phil for this beautiful image to paint. I thoroughly enjoyed doing it!
I am behind on these challenges, so do this french landscape first, and will backtrack to get the others done (I have the lily's in progress & hope to finish soon!)
This is Acrylic 9 x 12 on canvas sheet. I changed the coloring of the rooftops because I wanted to introduce a bit of color. (I hope this photo looks ok, I had to really downsize this one to get it under the 100k size limit).

Nice going Nancy. You accomplished a great deal in a short time. Mine has a way to go. I like your introduction of red. Kathy |

| Nan, yours looks like France. I love this. Here is my back-in-the-art-room attempt. I really like these challenges, don't you? It helps warm me up and learn some more ways not to do stuff. LOL |

Thank you Kathy & dp, I appreciate your comments. Dp - I love the watercolor look. I have always been a fan of the "watercolor look" - and alot of it is because I know how hard it is to do (at least for me). Interesting how you changed the road to a "V" shape - draws the viewer into the painting rather nicely. I look forward to seeing everyone else's rendition. Now, I have to get back to those lily's!!! - Nan

Wow!! I just finished the lily challenge and came hear to sketch the next one and what a surprise! Two already posted!! Nan, your painting is beautiful! I don't have the confidence to change much of anything from the photo but you did it beautifully...you definitely added to the beauty. dp, didn't I see somewhere that you didn't much care for landscapes?!? Crazy 'cause you really have the technique for doing them in wc. I'm a bit envious. This is really, really, nice.
Well I'm off to attempt mine...although I'm feeling a bit intimidated right about now! |

Intimidated??? Me too, Tami! I haven't even been able to finish the lilies, yet. I will try this one, but I'm sure it will not be until after the target posting date! I still want to go back and try the first ones, too. I think I may be overloading myself!
Nan and Dip - you two did so much by pulling the scene in and closer and still capturing the feel for the whole picture. Both of your paintings have separate lives of their own! Color me totally impressed. |

Thank you all so much. For me, the scene got pulled in closer to the view so I could actually paint those teeny buildings (working at 8x10, approx.) I didn't capture the misty feel of the original, but this was fun to do and very different for me. I don't like landscapes, but I've got lots of attempts. Thinking of cutting the worst ones up and collaging them for the All-Media challenge. LOL |

Thank you all! I just saw this photo & decided I wanted a sort of 'french-countryside' look & feel to it. I think I achieved that somewhat.
Kathy - looking forward to your rendition. I know it will have the details in all the right places! Always like your versions & their details. Tami - I always look at what I can change in a photo. Occasionally I paint it the same as the photo, but often I'm looking for what I want different. I think it's my way of owning the painting, know what I mean? Hollyga, don't get overloaded on these challenges. They shouldn't stress you out. Nothing says you have to do every single one. The great thing is, they are photos - they'll be waiting for you when you're ready to paint them. I still have one left hanging from the last group of challenges we did! LOL Dip - you may not like landscapes, but you do them very well. I love your idea of cutting up the worst ones for a collage. I have plenty around here too!

| Errgh...I tried to introduce more colors to add more interest and depth but it still looks overworked and flat. What's the deal?!
good practice and fun none-the-less! |

My painting will be posted soon, hopefully tomorrow. I just love being a part of your group and seeing your paintings. I am new at painting and never knew the "joy" that one can experience in art. (no "right or wrong," a nice thing in life!) Each one can express their own expressions into their own work and not have to be so exact and precise to be like the other one. I won't be so wordy next time, but I appreciate each one of you. Thank you for sharing......... |

I like all the paintings here. All are different but all lovely. Tami, I like your water very much. Your painting feels warm and smooth. Only the sky needs a little blue I think...
Tomarrow I'm going to buy some watercolors and try some paintings, but I know watercolors are hard to work with You all make me excited.---Suna. |

This is a 12 x 16 oil on convas board. I surprised myself. Painted two paintings this week taking turns with each.
Tami, I like the way the reflections in your water turned out. Maybe a little more blue in the sky would work Kathy Thanks for sharing Phil. This was an exciting challenge.

Suna - when you get your watercolors are you going to join us here???? I hope so - I will be excited to see your posts. Watercolor is definitely difficult for me and so are pastels. For me, the process is backwards than with oils and acrylics - so you will probably do well with watercolors since you are so proficient with pastels.
Kim - I like your rendition - it kind of reminds me of an overcast day.
Kathy - your's is so soft and feathery that it almost looks like watercolor. I love that you picked up on the bench (or whatever it is) under the tree on the right. I hadn't even noticed that in the picture until I saw it in your painting.
I haven't even started an attempt at this one - I'm still hung up on those #$%# lilies! I had hoped to at least post some progress but I didn't get a good photo and decided to paint rather than spend time trying to get a better picture. |

Tami - I like your version. I like your greens, and my hats off to you on the watercolor work. I find it so difficult - but it's so beautiful. Someday I will tackle it again! I think Kathy might be right - add a bit more blue in the sky, and a touch more to the water for reflections. That may be the added color you are looking for.
Susan - glad you're still with us, and I look forward to your version when it's ready to post. And you're correct, there is no right or wrong. Maybe some gentle guidance & direction.
Suna - welcome. Get those watercolors & join us. I believe that the more we paint, the better we will get at it. And it is fun!
Kathy - you did not disappoint me! Your piece is wonderful, and full of details. Like hollyga pointed out, you even got the bench-thing under the tree on the right! Glad to hear you did 2 this week - sounds like you are back on track with art. That's a good thing.
hollyga - it's ok. Post whenever you are ready. Sounds like you are having fun tho, and that's good. And I totally understand - I can spend so much time trying to get a good photo of my work, and then I'm upset because I lost painting time!
Where is Phil? Has he seen these paintings yet? It's his wonderful photo that he contributed for us to paint. I think I saw his version under the oil section, I'll have to check for it again.

Will we get to see the other painting you finished?! Hope so! |

Kathy, I thougt yours was watercolor! It's so soft and beautiful. Especially the water and the blue-green dominant color of the whole painting. Lavanya, yours is beautiful too. Is your photo a little dark here? If so, you can adjust the brightness with Office Picture Manager. Holland, I dont't agree with you; I don't think I will have the courage to show my watercolors here! I am used to pastels and scared of watercolors. Thank you for your nice comments.I wont't be able to join you until my printer is fixed. Nancie, thank you for your nice words. |

OMG, these are all so wonderful! I haven't even started yet! I am painting bathrooms instead of paintings...ugh!
Nancy, as always, I am impressed with your draftsmanship and your colors are great. The shading is very good...in acrylic no less.
Dip, I really like the freeness of your strokes and sunny colors...perhaps not as misty as the photo but reminiscent of a bright sunny day. And the value contrasts you achieve with watercolor are very dramatic.
Tami, I like your value contrasts too and the grayed out trees create a great impression of distance. I agree with Suna and Kathy that the sky needs more blue to make the right side feel lighter as in the reference.
Wow, Kathy, what a great sense of transparency you achieved with oil. The painting is soft and the blue cast captures that haziness of the reference.
Lavanya, Great painting! The draftsmanaship on the buildings is excellent and like the warmer colors. My only suggestion is that the reflections of the trees in the middle of the pond seem a little confusing to me. I am not sure whether the back part of the pond is water. Perhaps you could blur them into the back of the pond more to make sure it looks like a continuous body of water.
Suna, I am so glad you are joining us. I look forward to seeing your posts. And unfortunately, I do think pastels are more like oil than watercolor...watercolor for me is the most difficult medium. So I am cheering you on in working with WC....good luck!
Holland, I find that I need to cut myself some slack on these challenges....posting what I have done even if I am not completely happy with it....because I still have learned something from it and the comments from all of you are so helpful. I also get to a point where working on it longer is a chore. So ....maybe you want to call those !@#$% lillies done and post them! And then move on to Versailles!
I am so impressed with all of the work you guys have done. I may be able to carve out some time this weekend....I hope so. Barbara |

| Barb & Nancy - you are both so kind to give me encouraging comments on my lack of progress - and it really IS encouraging! I actually am sort of happy with what I have done with the lilies so far, but I think I need to back away from them for a while - they are beginning to make my eyes cross. I'm not sure I will have time to begin working on the village this weekend, though. My husband is an artist, as well - an artist/blacksmith! We have been very involved in the start-up of a Blacksmith Guild here in the area and we are demonstrating this weekend at a local Arts and Crafts facility. From one extreme to the other, huh!??! |
