Hi Lavanya,

Welcome. ....I am glad I will have another pastellist to talk to. This is very good...great idea to use the black of the paper...makes the whole interpretation very free and loose! I like the fading out as you go back into the darkness.

I find that nupastels give very "Pastel" colors..soft..and a little grayed out. I often use them as a first coat and for some subjects, I do the whole thing in nupastel. You can layer a softer pastel over them...I use Sennelier and Rembrandt to get more vibrant color. I was thinking that this painting might call for the more intense color so I may skip my base coat of nupastels and see what happens.

But I haven't even begun yet so I better get hopping!

Again, Welcome.

Lavanya - love the softness of your picture. I am not a pastel person so I don't know much about how to get more vibrant colors - I have trouble with that with acrylics and oils sometimes too.

Dip - lousy paper or not, love your reds and greens and your details. (Love your blog, too!  I have a granddaughter Olivia, too!)

Since I submitted this photo which was taken by a really great friend, I MUST do it! I am working on it in acrylic but I'm sure I won't finish by the end of the day. I think I will post what I have finished, though. I'm having trouble getting the colors I want - - I may need to just start over.

Barb, Priti, Kathy, et al - where are you?

It's a start - - 11 x 16 canvas paper, acrylic - - got errands to do this afternoon so I'm not sure I'll be able to get back to it today.  At this stage, comments and suggestions will be appreciated.

Wow, HollyGa, you work quick! Thanks, too, for the nice comments. I am amazed at the number of Olivia's and other old fashioned sounding names these days -- we have a Lillian coming soon, too!

Hi Guys...sorry for missing this one.. I may be able to do somethingh tonight but I have been biusy retiling a bathroom....my first. So I have not had the time to pick up my pastels. Dip, wondeffully dramatic interpretation...love your colors and free style. Holland, great start...I like the way you concentrated on getting the yellows down Now to add those gorgeous reds! Susan, your composition and the way you handled the disappearing into the darkness is very mysterious...love your interpretaion.

well here is my sketch"....given the short amount of time I had to do it...it is most definitely a "sketch." I have always had difficulty getting the shapes right on flowers, and I obviously needed a lot more time on the challenge. But like Dip said, sometimes these challenges teach us what we do not want to do again. Barbara

Well, I'm late. Sorry about the blurry photo but it actually works in my favor!! 4x6 watercolor dp, your watercolor lilies are electric! I actually like the effect from the cheap paper! Lavanya, I just couldn't get the same effect of the receding lilies. Great job. Holland, can't wait to see your finished product! Susan, great depth as well, barbara, lovely! I love your boldness with the color and composition! tami

I have finally finished mine enough that I think it can be posted. I loved this photo so much (been really into flowers lately), that I painted this on a full-size canvas: Acrylic on 16x20 gallery stretched canvas (I'm painting the edges with the background, which is a deep, deep purple). I'll be back to look at everyone's work - I can tell that many of you loved this photo also! Nan

I just had a chance to go back through all the renditions. Wonderful work everyone!!!!

Lavanya - Wonderful work. Pastels is something I never got the knack of, and you seem to be right at home with them. Using the black background paper was smart (I've done 3 coats of the deep purple on mine, and will probably do a 4th).

Dip - this is a wow! Love the colors, the lines & the background. Very bold, but not too loud.

Hollyga - this is a really good base. Some details will make it pop. Love your colors also.

Susan - your suggestions in the background work very well (I had trouble fading the distant flowers)

Barb - I like your strokes & colors. For a quick sketch, this has a lot of details in it. Nicely done.

Tami - I really like that "melon-red-pink" color you have. What colors did you mix/use to achieve it?

Struggled with mine, Barb....I love your colors, so very good. I am a very "abstract" thinker and paint that way also, I'm not sure how I disappeared into the darkness. Your comment of "very mysterious" was a special comment and made me smile, Thank-you.

Tami, I too like the melon color....I know how hard watercolor is and I think you did a great job.

Nan, as always you have excelled...your realism makes me think this is the photo...great colors and great effect of receding into the darkness.

Thankls to you all for the comments on bold colors...I ditched the Nupastels and used Rembrandts...much more saturated.

Nan, you nailed this one and the love of the subject photograph is very evident. Such lovely and fascinating. Thank you for the "wow" comment, too. Being mostly a theatrical person (tho' not a drama queen, lol), I try to get "wow" into most of my artwork. CTBarb- this is beautiful. I am trying to learn to use OP, and have a set of Rembrandts. You are very inspiring to me.
