Hi Everyone,

I have a large mural type painting that I purchased from a homeowner at a garage type sale approximately 30 years ago. I used it in a waiting room of my office at the time. It is painted in the style of abstract expression. There is no apparent signature on the painting or on the back. Anyway, lately I have been curious as to who the artist might be. Even if the artist was known. Can anyone make a suggetion as to how I can go about having it examined by an expert ? I would appreciate any suggestion. Thanks a million.

Take a digital picture of it (jpeg) and send it to the art departments of the auctions like Sotheby's, Butterfield's, and Christie's, and Smithsonian.

as the artist might be totally unknown.....how about sending that digital to the local paper of the area you purchased the painting from and ask that it be one of those curiousity articles....~do you know who painted this~ type of article? local papers are very different from the big houses....they just might love the idea!

Hey Guys,

Those are great suggestions. Here I'm thinking of hireing an expensive expert for an opinion. I may still have to do that but this way I may have more knowledge as to the authenticity of the work. This painting really looks like a work of an artist all of us know. Funny, after all of these years this notion has just come to me. What prompted this was, you know some of these programs on TV where they interview people who have gone to these garage sales and bought a painting for a few dollars, only to find out later that it's worth yadda, yadda, yadda and now don't know what to do with it. Blaa, blaa, blaa. Thanks for your help and wish me luck.
