Both of these are watercolor underpainting and colored pencil which is a fun and quick way to get ideas down on paper. 5x7, approx. size. Having fun doing a series from photographs taken at our local farmer's market.

dp,
these are great! when you say it is a great way to get your ideas on paper, are you sketching it with wc pencils and then brushing with water for the underpainting? then adding colored pencil? I think I'll have to get some of those. i tried oil pastels thinking I could sit and do a painting anywhere but I'm not really happy with the appearance without fussing with blending and all. this seems to be quicker and I love the look! Great job! tami

Tami, thank you so much. To answer your q's: I usually sketch with a good old HB pencil and then wash the watercolor on either with WC pencils and a wet q-tip (lol) or just write notes. Unless I take photos, which I do most often. Then I sketch what I want out of the reference, and watercolor it up at home with my big messy palette. Final details are sometimes with colored pencil. This works for me with the smaller details or pulling a cohesive shape out of a mass of colors. I bought a really small (12) set of watercolor pencils and carry those around. They are just basic colors, really. Don't need more than that. Also have a teeny tiny little palette of dry pan watercolors that goes in my purse with a little sketchbook or lately those little ACEO cards. It also comes in handy for grandchildren. I have a problem with pastels and their extreme messiness (at least, in my hands). Oil pastels are a bit better, but I'm with you in the blending and fussing school, so they are very unsatisfying to take with me anywhere.

These look very nice. The second looks like pastel work; the colours are vivid and bright. ----Suna.
