Hi all!

This is my first time here...not sure if this is the right place to post this, but since it's a colored pencil forum, I thought someone might be able to help...

I've been working on a colored pencil portrait on black paper. Its been several years since I worked with colored pencil, so I'm kind of getting used to it again. The portrait was going really well, but there are a few spots where I'd built up so much color, that the pencil was starting to grind into the surface of the paper. I tried to fill it in the best I could, but its getting worse, and the black paper is showing through really bad. It's like the top surface of the paper is torn away, and I'm down into the fluffier middle of the paper. I can't get my pencil to stick to it!

Does anyone know how I can "fill in" or otherwise fix the paper surface?? This is in hilight areas, so I need them to be quite light. I tried a dab of white out, but that was way too white, and the pencil just scraped it back off anyways. Waaaaahhhh!!!

you have just found out why most of us would spend decent money on good paper....anything less wont hold up to the many layers...sounds like you definetly have worn through the top layers of the paper, and trying to add more cp? just isnt going to work.....white out definetly wasnt the way to go....far to bright.....

if you have some acrylics? you could mix up the color you need and add it....cp will go over acrylics but got to warn ya....i wouldnt go back over it because of the problem with your paper...if ya didnt have that problem it would be okay to add more cp on that spot....but i would try to repair it by adding the right colors of acrylics...and most likely your going to have to mix up the correct color/colors...take a digital photo or scan the portrait and use a software program so you could take a sample of the color from that area to try to identify it a bit better so you can naiil it a bit easier...without mucking around with it....
in the areas that the paper is fine, you could thinly spread the acrylic/patch, so you can put cp over it when its dry, but remember that the trick with cp is a very light hand....not adding more pressure so that you dig through layers, but adding just enough pressure to lay layers on top of layers......

this all might not fix it.....but this definetly would be one way to try!....

Thanks so much for the reply! I will definitely try that. I think I would like to try adding black then going over it with pencil. Because of the dark paper color, the other colors are not "pure" but have the black slightly shining through.

I wondered if tinting some gesso would work better than pure acrylic, giving it some tooth for the pencil to grab...I'll let you know if it works...
