Hi everyone,

I'm planning on creating some Christmas ornaments with colored pencil on wood and have some questions:

  1. Do I need to seal the wood first?  With what?
  2. Can I use turpenoid on top of the colored pencil to "fix" the color?
  3. I want to add glitter - is glitter glue appropriate?

Thanks so much for your help.

Hi Michele
IMHO - I wouldnt use coloured pencil on wood
Some years ago I did similar with acrylic - was simple and worked well - no sealing first , no fixing on the end

Be carefull with using glitter - less is sometimes mor

Hi Egon,

Thanks for your comments. Have you used colored pencil on wood? I think I'm still going to try it, because I love the control if offers. Although, I'll probably try acrylilc also.

Yes, I've practiced with the glitter on paper and definitely found that one can go overboard with it. Thanks.

instead of on wood....i would have used something called ~shrinky dink~....you can pick it up in michaels or a.c.moore or most crafty type of stores that carry varieties....
it comes in opaque or transparent sheets, its plastic.....because you can lay the sheets over your sketch, you can sketch out a design, put the sheet atop of it, and then work your image with cp or cp and magic marker, i personally liked the look of cp....
make your images LARGER than what you want the finished piece to be! because? after you finished cp work...puncture a hole at the top....a hole puncher will do or something else that will give you a nice hole...and then? one pops it in the oven, and i wont give times or temps cause i cant remember! but...what comes out is a thick piece of what appears to be glass thickeness, glass like.....and a great ornament maker!
or key chain dangle,or a charm... or a zillion other options...
this might help out:

Hi Betty,

Thanks for the compliment. I did finish them by spraying with three coats of Minwax Polyacrylic mostly to keep the glitter from falling off. It was pretty easy working with wood, although it did take some worthwhile preparation. I sanded the wood lightly first and they coated it with a neutral wood sealer. Some colored pencils did not work well but others went on very smoothly allowing me to pretty fairly easily. Of course, acrylic painting was the easiest application in color, but the colored pencils allowed me more freedom in design. Glitter was applied either with glitter glue or with loose glitter with acrylic medium or clear glue. What fun it was to create these and I'll definitely try more for next Christmas along with your wonderful idea of Shrinky Dink. I'll be going to Michaels very soon now. BTW, I even sold one of the ornaments - the bottom right one above. Yea - at least I have one sale on the books for 2007. (I didn't try very hard this past year to sell - something I hope to change this year!).

when i took to heart the words of another artist that ~being an artist is fifty percent creating the work, and fifty percent selling the work~......i began to sell a bit more, because i found ways to get my work seen....i tried the gallery route, but wasnt successful, paying for slides was a huge cost and found it frustrating!...
now they are beginning to change over to email submissions or at the very least cds...
but many sales come from word of mouth, making a name for yourself in a special style or product...establishing your self one rung up the ladder at a time...~wink~....so for 2007? ya were on the first rung.....2008 is where ever you step up to!
