Hi everyone,

Here are two abstract colored pencil drawings I did (with some pen & ink added).  I admit I was mostly fooling around with my new pencils and these are my first drawings (and only so far - I'm a colored pencil newbie).  I'd like to see if I can take these somewhere.  I'm totally new to abstract - do I need to find a focal point?  I'd like to saturate the color in some places (if not everwhere there's color (I guess that's everywhere!)) and try using a solvent to get a more painterly look.  Any comments/suggestions?  Thanks.

Hello again,

I admit, these are both very busy and colorful. I guess that's mainly why I'm asking for your input and suggestions. I plan to create a black and white version of these on my computer to see where I can balance the values out more. Can't help but wonder if it there's too much color and where I can go with these. Thanks for your critiques.

For me.....I'm not sure about the 1st one. I think the blackened areas at the top look a bit scribbly and they keep distracting my eye from the rest of the picture. It also has a lot of red for my taste. I LOVE the 2nd picture. The colors are not competing with each other and the shapes are pleasing to look at. I'm new with the colored pencils too....Currently working on my first large piece. I haven't yet tried a solvent, so I can't offer any advice there. But I think someone on this site (a few months back) used mineral spirits on a few of her CP's and they really DID look like paintings when she was finished.

Hi Jess,

Thanks so much for your input. It really helps me to see where I can go with these. I'd love to see your work in progress. I see in your profile that your in New England - what part?. I'm from Rhode Island (currently in Alabama). Send me an e-mail if you'd like: michele.traum@mchsi.com. Thanks.

Hi Michelle

I'm up in NH....born and raised. Haven't yet taken a photo of my current drawing. I'm REALLY hoping to have it finished within the next week. Sure wish I could work faster!!!! I threw away my last few CP attempts. Hopefully I don't end up messing this one up right before it's done!

ahhhh seems there are new englanders about!...heheee...i am from southeastern ma.
these are strong in color..but seems they should be...its fun to experiment with the colors for sure....

now let me ask if you used yellow for the yellow areas, blue for blue, red for red ect...or did you layer different reds to create your red?

the second one reminds me of paint tubes with paint squirting out of em....dont ask me why thats what i see..LOLOL..sometimes i do see some strange things! ~wink~...

i had a puzzle, the image was just cps tossed on a table but the whole image, was filled with em..nothing else but them layered on top of each other, every which way...it was facinating! okay so my family thought i was insane to try it, but i really wanted it cause of cps...lolol....i was the only one who ended up putting it together, but i think my son tried his hand in it a bit too..reason for sharing?
eh....why not create a composition from objects similar to that....so you can fine tune your color combos before starting on something a bit more serious?

Hi one who sees,

I looked at your website - superb! I will take any and all criticism that you'll give. How long have you been drawing/painting? The colors I used were mostly pure but I did layer some colors here and there, not to create a totally new color but to enhance the ones already put down.

What does cps mean? I'm not sure I understand your suggestion "...why not create a composition from objects similar to that...(etc.) Can you re-explain? Thanks

Michele
