Hi, I'm new here but some of you might have seen some of my work on other forums. I have been working in colored pencil for about 5 years now and use Prismacolors on different colored Stonehenge papers. This was one done of my Granddaughter Hannah on black Stonehenge. It's about 10x12 inches. I do renderings of a multitude of subjects and find portraits one of  the most challenging.

Hi Gbritnell,
This is beautiful. Welcome to the forum. I look forward to seeing more of your work. Your Grandaughter is precious. This is a portrait that an artist might give their granddaughter when she becomes an adult, otherwise it would not leave their wall.

Her gaze is so arresting. The hair is beautiful as well. Very nice results, make me want to try work on black paper.

Thank you everyone for your gracious comments. I will post some more of my work shortly. I have done several pieces of my granddaughter, a couple on black and some on Stonehenge white. When you work on white and lay down a light wash of color it barely shows up so instinctively you want to add more but when you work on black you see that you are actually putting color down so I think that practicing on a piece of  black paper will give you a feel for how much pressure to use. I had never been a portrait artist until I bought Ann Kullberg's and saw her remarkable work. From there I was hooked.

Precious Portrait you have to love it.
There are a couple things that bother me.
They don't really matter.
I wish the utter most lift on her hair wasn't there.
The white area (or lighter area around her closest eye )
brings / or makes her start to really look more alive - than the other darker areas, on her face (lighten it up more) maybe it is just this side of the face, areas of the forehead, and shoulder spot.
I see you have a few brighter highlights in the hair - looks like you may be hesitanting to push the white.
It looks fantastic as is.

its a beautiful lil portrait...a gem...
and i too love playing with toned and colored paper for bgs....very different when you work on black isnt it? lol...all the colors appears to be much whiter or brighter values because of the black bg...

one comment i might suggest is be very careful about using directional, in this case diagonal strokes to create flesh....it will give a very textured look to it, vs using a stroke that doesnt show your lines/texture....a smoother application taking care not to show texture...it takes a bit more time though, but definetly worth the effort..
