This is my very first colored pencil drawing. I used "mi-tientes" paper with prismacolor pencils. Don't know why other then thats what I bought. I do not know much about anything and the lady at the store didn't either. Anyway, I am having trouble with the left ear. I want to add some more white to it but it won't take any more color. I tried the felt and the workable fixative. What did I do wrong? The paper is also too grainy, I emailed Scott and he was so kind to respond with the right paper to use. How can I salvage this one? I do not have any training just a newfound outlet after raising two kids. My youngest just graduated from high school and off to the university, I hope this will help with the "empty nest". Please post any critisisms or any help.
I appreciate it so much,
Nicole |

Hi Nicole, This question about adding white came up at the end of March by the forum member HEATHERM under her posting ‘Prismacolor Pencil Quandary.’ A number of the other forum members made some useful suggestions that you might read. I just saw that posting at the bottom of the second page of postings, but could be at the top of the third page if someone posts something new before you get a chance to look. Good Luck. Leon

| Hi, Nicole, I am brand new today for this forum, but have been interested in colored pencil for many years and have worked with several different brands.I have also worked with pastel which I find goes much faster than pencil, but pencil has the distinct advantage of not being particularly messy. It seems I have much to do so making time for art comes slower than I expected. With your "empty next" you will have time now and you know what that means---practice, practice, practice! I have taken a couple of workshops, one with Arlene Steinberg and most recently with Ann Kullberg. I thoroughly enjoyed them, met nice people, and needed the incentive to get back into the pencil. I hope you will keep up the good work and look forward to viewing your next project. Take care, r |

Thanks to you both for the encouragement. Leon thanks for the location of the discussion with "heatherm". It was very helpful, from there I found another discussion. Apparently I used the wrong side of the paper too. OOPS!
I enjoy looking through all the forums and am learning a lot. Thanks to all!!

i use sanford prismacolor...not sure which brand you are using..some are more wax some more oily some soft some not.....all vary...and? even the same brand, two whites might not be the same in consistancy.....also....if the tip of your cp has been used a bit...it might become ~polished~....and not so readily applied...so keep a lil sanding block near by to touch the tip to a bit....
some claim you should only use sharp points.....but opinions are like belly buttons, every one has one and no two are alike..~wink~.....i use both ways....a rounded tip when applying even layers....and sharpening em a bit when i want a bit different effect......
the whole thing about cp is layers....and colors colors colors....so one doesnt use say, orange, to create something orange....you tend to mix the colors on the paper by using light layers of things that will create orange....yellow ochre, putty, sand, cream....ginger root....all these combined create the varying tones needed to create orange, but its not flat....because you use others to add to it for texture ect....greyed lavendar french greys...ect...
i use the felt trick and never have a problem...maybe your not quite rubbing hard enough if the texture of the paper is rough....but!....turn the lil felt piece a few times so your not rubbing the in, polishing the surface....i dont use fixative for my cps...it can change up the colors and that can be a problem....many use it though so its not a wrong thing...just a preference...and like any medium...we all have our own techniques....
with a very heavy texture one has to apply the color and turn the nib in your finger tips so its applying a bit on an edge...many times newbies tend to stop before half way....so keep trying to apply it...or as suggested try another cp of the same color to see if the softness of the core is a bit different....
and as for wrong and right side? dont fret....there is no right nor wrong...sometimes i will flip and use the back side because it isnt so smooth....sometimes i dont....again...its an opinion thing but the more you talk with cp users, and graphite users as well...you will find out there isnt a wrong side to paper, only the side that you use for the project your on..~wink~... i just posted a new cp, and it includes the orange tones that ya might find interesting using exactly the colors i listed here so far......i am far from being half way...because usually? i cant even count the layers i add...
the paper i am using for this cp is the back side of canson bristol plate finish....which is a very smooth paper, but the back side is a bit less smooth, polished so as long as one is very careful....it can be a wonderful paper to use...~grin~ |
