Lennie,
Your drawing skills are excellent. If the values were pumped up more this painting would pop! It has all medium tones, need darker darks and lighter lights. Good be the way the camera photographed it too. In any case, well done!

Lennie..............your cp works are exquisite! Love these flowers, don't know how you 'cp painters' do it, I must try again. My first one was dreadful.

Myrna, I know what you mean, after I put in the commentary above, I thought why did I do that when I can't even do simple things with CP! I will try it again someday.

Myrna & Heather......

Let's start a support group! .....for those and love and appreciate all that colored pencils have to offer.....but feel like they're banging their heads against the wall when trying to create their OWN paintings! Sorry.....just venting

Jess,
Waaaah! It's okay to vent, I do it all the time to my cat, she is a pretty good listener and answers me back too. Some day I will try CP's again, right now I am on a deadline for a few paintings, so won't be able to even think about starting to try again until middle of June at earliest. When I do I will be bugging everyone for help, I know I will! You will all probably throw me off the forum because of my nuisance value!

Thanks a lot everyone for your comments and suggestions. Comments and suggestions are appreciated. I must admit also that when I started with colored pencils I got very frustrated. But after trying and applying some techniques from painting they became a lttle easier and a whole lot more fun.

This flower is quite easy to do. I started with yellow strathmore paper. Then I sketched the flowers the stem and buds with a thin lead pencil. I then applied the color golden rod to certain areas of the petals to emphasize the shapes and curvatures of the petals. Then I applied the color cream to areas where it needed to be convex in shape. I then applied white on the centers of the flowers as well as drew the pistil and stamen with the colors fuchsia, poppy red, yellow ochre and vilolet as shown in the drawing. Next were the veins. I started with the thicker veins then the thinner veins with the color fuchsia. Then I applied fuchsia on the edges of some of the petals and a little tuscan red on the darker areas. Then I did the stem with the colors mineral green , may green (Derwent Studio) olive green , cream and tuscan red. Then the buds with the colors fuchsia, chartreuse, tuscan red olive green and cream. I hope this helps a lttle.

Lennie,
Thank you so much for your explanation. The photo obviously doesn't do this justice, so ignore what I said about the values.

i respond as heather did....though i definetly understand the variations in lighting conditions give the piece a totally different look sometimes!...its the curse of digi photos or even scanning produces...

so i would have said....the bg is far too light to show off the orchids well, and the beauty in which you have rendered them.....contrasts in values can make a piece pop!

Hi One who sees, thanks for your comments and suggestions. I totally agree with you but I guess I just opted for a lighter background.
