Hi Ron, It's hard to believe that such a good painting is color pencil. It is very good work. I second Frank on saying that this looks like a photograph. I too hope that you are feeling much better. I look forward to seeing more of your posts. Leon |

Amazing work! I agree with Frank and Leon....it is VERY realistic looking! I love the woodwork on the grip! My dad is a gun enthusiast....I'll have to show him this one.

i am going to comment and then run like hell!...~wink~
its a beautiful moving piece...for many reasons.......
the work is excellently rendered but? but? yes there is a but... its eight percent done....unless the paper was shining when ya took the photo..the color still has that as yet unfinished look to it.....more layers! its calling for more layers!... |

one who sees, Wait! Don't run! The gun's not loaded! Thanks for your comments but I'm not sure I understand. 8% finished? How would more layers improve this piece? I value your opinion and that's why I'm asking for a bit more explaination. |

Well I disagree. I think the fact that the flag has some white showing thru, adds to the texture......almost making it look like denim. (Did I spell that right?) If OWS was referring to the pistol, I can see where maybe a few more layers could be added to the barrel and chamber.....making the black darker.....but I don't think I'd want to see more work anywhere else. Just my opinion.

Well I disagree that this painting needs more layers. I also don't think the gun needs to be darker (sorry Jess). This is an old gun. It would not be dark and shiny new. To me, it has the realistic look of old, well used, almost rusted metal. I agree that this piece is very realistic--you feel like you can almost touch it-- and very, very well done. If I didn't know better, I would think it is a photograph. It is an awesome painting in any medium, I'm absolutley flabbergasted that is was rendered in pencil. Ron, you must have the patience of a saint! |

She (OWS) probably meant eighty percent ? because 8 % is really too too little and you certainly put a lot of work into it.
OWS probably should run :-))) and not because of Ron .... OK, OK, no violence allowed here !!! )))

typo ron....eighty percent done....not eight forgive me...i seem to be risking bodily harm in some areas....sorry peeps....not my intension to raise hackles honest!!!.. its not that you want things darker or even differentl values. though the very last step is to tweak those up a notch too.....
its that i would do more colors of the existing layers that you already put down....to increase the saturation..... ron? did you get to the point where if you held the painting very flat....,and got down to peer across the surface of the paper...that it was filled with a thick layer of waxy color? or you could see spots that were thinner covered...and... when you look at the piece....do you see white specks of paper, from the texture, still showing? |

one who sees, Ok, 80% sounds better. Maybe I can explain why this piece has some of the paper shining through. I rarely do a CP piece(notice how I'm cleverly avoiding the drawing/painting issue?) when I don't allow some of the paper to show through. But I usually work on colored paper. The paper color is part of the overall effect. I called this piece finished because I liked it. I would have taken it further if I were trying to make it look like an oil painting, but I don't think I would have been successful. But I do understand what you are saying about the white peeking through. It really doesn't show that much on the original work. And I always welcome your comments. You have a lot of CP savy to share. No raised hackles here! |

| thanks ron...your words are muchly appreciated...i too enjoy working on colored paper...using the bg color as one of the colors within the objects...many times i will chose the bg color so that it works as the object color or the shadow color....its a whole different effect with cp, where less is more sometimes....~wink~ |

This brings to mind another concern. What colored paper do you find to be most lightfast? Canson claims their Mi-Teintes paper is lightfast but they don't document that claim. (at least, not on their website) I have done a good bit of my CP work on charcoal and pastel papers such as the Strathmore 500 Series. They have faded, some drastically. Have you had any problems with paper fading? I bought a can of the UV protection spray by Krylon and tried it on a scrap of colored paper. It turned the paper much darker and didn't lighten when it dried. That's not an option to prevent fading, in my opinion. |

if i use tinted or color paper? it seems the paper does eventually lose some of its color.....and i never hang mine near or about bright sunlight....but i have a piece that is on sketchbook paper....just average paper, and it now is about fifteen years old.....and still looks rather crisp...the colors are still clean and bright.... the paper might be a tad off, but then it wasnt a bright white to begin with....
i am guilty of not properly sealing the back quite as i shoud....and this could make a difference too....i forgot to add that fabriano seems pretty color fast, i have a new pad of canson, mi-teintes:black but i havent gotten into it yet...
and i had used strathmore 400, which nearly wore my cps down to a nub before i could get good coverage....its such a rough paper, it might not be worth ever using again....there are far better ones, and easier to work with!
