Hi folks,
I’ve been laid up in bed since getting home from spending a night at the hospital last Tuesday. I thought that I had had a heart attack at work on Wednesday, but it turned out to be an Acute Pericarditis. As a result I’ve been going crazy lying here reading, writing, playing with my computer and bothering you all. Yesterday, I got out my Faber-Castell pencils and decided to give it a whirl. I’ve hardly touched them in three years. This is what I done so far. Any comments appreciated. This piece I've titled 'A Sad Little Rose."

this is nicely done, did you crop the painting or did you let the vase run off the paper? I would suggest a bottom on the vase to balance the composition and crop the top a few inches, so there is not so much negative space up there. Overall very nicely done.
I do hope you are feeling better. |

Hi Leon, I like your drawing. I agree with Heather about the vase. It's good to hear that you didn't have a heart attack and I hope Acute Pericarditis is not a very serious ailment. I hope you are feeling much better.

Hi Everyone, Thanks Robink7, Heather, Frank, Ron and Anna for your kind comments. Heather and Ron I took the lazy/easy way and ran the vase off the bottom of the painting when I did it. I’ll take your advice Heather and crop to within a few inches or so of the top of the rose if I decide to frame it. It was an interesting exercise. I have not done any serious CP work for about 3 years and after seeing what great work that is being displayed on the forum it has been giving me an itch to try. Ron pericarditis is inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart, the pericardium. I’m on medication for the inflammation and mainly just rest. I do feel tired, and as I’m usually very active being abed drives me crazy. Leon

very sorry to hear that your ill Leon....and i know exactly what you went through, i too had an infection/inflamation of the lining of pericardium....and it does feel like a heart attack! the sharp pain is incredible and its amazing that this ~inflamation~ can feel that way!...shooting pains and all!...so i greatly sympathize...the good news is? to my knowledge it hasnt reaccured and i dont take any meds for it....and hopefully it WONT!...
i love your lil sad rose....its hard to tell cause of digi shots...but...did you add the loverly lil light sky blue effect into the bg color? or is that the flash? sometimes its hard to tell...but if its blue...i think it looks great!..and i would continue to work it a bit more....
what type paper? cps?
and i noted that the stem of the rose was yellowed....i was thinking it was far past prime....but..its the same color as the vase?....ya might want to layer some green on it...? some of the most important color work in cps is, using complimentary colors... though purple in cp is far too strong in most cases to use....greyed lavendar is a muted purple with mid value grey....it can create a lot of very nice effects...in this case i would have tried using some of it in the shadows of the vase.....a muted for of purple...but still purple is the complimentary color to yellow..so would have worked nicely....
its so exciting to see so much cp suddenly appear! its a fabulous medium!

Hi Everyone, Thank you ‘One Who Sees’ for your comments. I had fun with the vase and the flower. The paper is not very good quality being that I just tore out a page from one of my 65lb. sketch pads and tacked it to a drawing board with drafting tape. The color pencils I used were Faber-Castells. As a quick study or prelim I guess it’s all right. That is blue that you are seeing in the background “One Who Sees.’ I did not use a flash in taking the picture and again thank you for your advice on the use of complementary colors. As an aside, my Wife and I decided to take our own test on color pencils last week. We looked about and she came up with a set of Derwent and Spectracolor (I believe Design Spectracolor was discontinued in the late 90’s, although you can still find them on-line.), and I came out with my Faber-Castells and an old set of Berol Prismacolors (when did Prismacolor drop the name Berol or am I dating myself?). We took a blind test first to see which pencil had the feel of the least drag and then we looked at which pencil seemed to put the most/richest color on the paper. We found that in the blind test Prismacolor was first, followed by Spectracolor, Faber-Castell and Derwent. In the second test it was Prismacolor followed by Derwent, Faber-Castell and then Spectracolor. What was interesting was that the differences between Derwent, Faber-Castell and Design Spectracolor were nuances apart. That is the differences were such that to different people the rank of order might be different. Leon

very interesting about the cps brands!....i have used them a few years...eh...dating myself but around 72 when my daughter was born i believe thats when i was discovering them...clearner medium when ya have an infant to take care of...
i began with eagles..then berol prismacolor, then sanford prismacolor i have some derwent wcs, and i too have the old design spectracolor with the double nib, both ends are different colors...my favorite are the sanfords, not verythins but reg..and someplace in there is also empire!
did you also find? that within the same brand...the same color...often times some pencils might be a touch softer than others....? ...i buy single colors at my fav art store....keeps my prices down from buying full sets and wasting money on colors that i dont need more of.....a new cp means a new stop to the store to see what colors that might relate to the new work that i might not have.....because sandord comes out with new colors many times...
ron i used to use my sketchpaper for all my cp works....finding the texture rather nice for them...but..the paper doesnt hold up, doesnt permit you to erase easily, something that was never considered long ago....a stroke of cp was down and permenant, so one had to be sure of your hand and eye....now...using better grade of paper...especially the ~board~ thicker type of paper....its a much more forgiving medium....
your not faulty in your remembering...eagle? was first..then the company changed the name to berol...
a bit of history is out there on the web...you might enjoy perusing this link or finding some other:
http://www.berol.com/about_berol_history.asp
believe it or not...there are a few very old pencils i still use, eh the pencils is shrinking but still very useable!.. |
