| I just finished this drawing, It's on 14x17 Strathmore Windpower Vellum Bristol. I used Sanford Prisma CP. I'd like to know what you think. Please, comment on the good and bad points. Thank you. |

| Wow! The colors and detail are great, her face has such character. I would bring the edge of her left sleeve to the edge of the paper, and also take the background to the edges. Will give a more solid composition. I could never do something like this in CP. I really like this one! |

| LMP01..........this is incredible. It's one of those pictures you see and say "colored pencil? Really?" I love these pictures of 'crusty' old folks with the wonderful faces full of experience and character. Your colors are so bright and lively. LOVE it |

| Your fabrics are so real! It's hard to believe that you were able to achieve such vibrant colors using color pencils. What brand do you use? Claudia |

Hello and Thank you very much for all your wonderful comments.
Hi Heather, I like your suggestion, I think I'll give that a try and repost the drawing. Thanks a lot.
Hello Myrn, I just recently found a blending pencil at the art store and it has really help in making the texture and colors of my drawings look a little better.
Hello Anna, I'm glad that you like the drawing, It was fun creating this and bringing out the character of my subject.
Hi Claudia, I was able to achieved the vibrant colors by layering and using the technique called burnishing. I used the Sanford brand of Prisma. |

beautiful vibrant colors....very nice lively portrait!...
as with any who use color, be that paint or cp....its personal preference as to how vibrant or how muted the colors will be....
i think many get the wrong idea when they hear the suggestion of adding warm or cool grey to the work....it will not dull your color....although it will effect the color...your in control of that final outcome... in shadows a touch of warm grey will gently soften edges, and whether color or black and white...the same principles still apply...found and lost edges are very importrant in creating depth/dimension...identifying where those edges should be....can be a bit tricky...
i have a full line of all greys....and i am always shopping for more... i used to long ago....go over the finished cp work with a light layer of graphite...this slightly toned the color down but it took on a better realistic look....now i just use the cp greys...before i hadnt had them....and they pretty much do the same thing....knock back the vibrancy a bit in the appropriate areas... i dont burnish...because this tends to ~seal~ the top of the work....and sometimes it will refuse to accept new layers after burnishing.....but i have seen others have wonderful effects in doing so... best hint i could give? use good paper!....experiement with different grades and different texture... |

i am hoping that this lil graphic will display what i mean about cvc=contrasts, values and compliments...
your colors are vibrant...but against the bg they seem to fight a bit...
deepen the value, using compliments of your established colors, you can make the colors pop a bit more...hope you dont mind that i finagled your piece a tiny bit!!... |

This is beautiful! I cannot imagine how much patience was required for all of that pattern & all those wrinkles! I'm new at cp (4 full paintings so far, nothing worthwhile though!) and I'm finding that I just don't have much patience for details.
Everyone has some good suggestions for improvement but there's no doubt that it's well-done as it is.

You people that have the patience to produce pieces of art like this are very awe inspiring. What bad points. Nothing bad here. OWS's rendition of your original is amazing also, but again there is nothing bad about yours. Jim

Outstanding work.....vibrant colors! I am having soooo much trouble getting the bright colors WITHOUT the white of the paper showing thru. I can really appreciate the effort in this! Congrats!

Thank you all very much for the wonderful comments and suggestions. I really didn't expect this much enthusiasm. Your comments and suggestions are highly appreciated.
One who sees, I can see what you mean about adding shades of grey to soften the edges and add depth and dimension to the drawing. Actually, I realized that I still need to do something with the background and the left sleeve. By the way, I don't mind the changes that you made to the drawing, it gives me some ideas to use on future drawings.
Jang, I just work on this a little at a time and only when I'm inspired, that way it keeps me motivated.
Jess, If you like, you can try layering or using small strokes to keep the paper from showing. |

the hours of work that go into a cp piece, can be mind boggling...the work can sometimes be tedious....but its a very rewarding medium if you love details...i mean...reallly love detail work!...
the paper disapears when you have enough layers on it....the key is not to obsess about covering it....just work till it is covered...small strokes do help...but in truth its all about the amount of layers...
normally if i want an area to be white, or light in value...i lay down a light layer of white....this protects the paper a bit...and if i inadvertently lose that whiteness, a bit of harder pressure with the light color again...will bring that layer back to the light.....
the sanfords are soft and waxy....some colors a bit harder/softer than others.. some other brands might be harder, oily feeling, or soft and chalky feeling..it depends what you are looking for in the medium.....
and the paper? well..like opinions...everyone has their own preference..i will use canson bristol smooth, plate finish.....or i could use strathmore lightly textured.... with plate finish you have to be very cautious because of the slick surface...layers are harder to put down sometimes....a more exact hand and choice of colors is needed sometimes.... with a bit of texture, its the coverage issue.....those lil white bits of paper still showing through? are a clear sign that the layering isnt done yet....and one has to keep working....when the surface of the colored area....appears slick and thick with color.....and the pencil begins to slip and smear a bit.....thats the stage when you are getting enough color on the paper...definetly a medium that one has to study a bit, and work hard at to perfect....but if drawing is your love....and graphite work is something that really excites you but you want to try a bit of color in a controlled way.............cp is something to try!
this was a loverly intricate portrait....and the clothing, turban and tunic details were done meticulously... and this is an excellent example of one who can draw...using a medium that demands perfection.....there arnt many cover ups with cp.....but then sometimes thats exactly what we love about it! it demands perfection of a single stroke to create the whole |
