This is a colored pencil of my dog with her favorite toy. It's the only thing that she doesn't chew to pieces! She's part Lab. Prismacolor pencils on Mi-Tientes paper.

She lolls her tongue while the ball is in her mouth? That is too funny and so cute! Is her neck really that fat? I don't see any definition of her bone structure in the jaw, could be because her mouth is open. From the eyes up and below the chin seems to have more detail of fur than her face, could be my computer (or the photo) though. This is another lovely piece. Love the eyes.

Hi Ron:   Very nice job.  I, too, like to do pet portraits.  They make a lot of people very happy when they receive them.   Thanks again Ron, for your last post concerning "blue sky".   Jerry

Thanks Heather and Jerry.
I took several photos of my dog in a effort to get one that best displayed her personality.
She was sitting in this pose which somewhat distorts the neck and sholder area.
I started at the top and worked my way down on the drawing and realized when I had finished that something didn't look just right.
I agree, Heather, that the neck looks too fat but colored pencil is really hard to change once you get it to this stage. If I were doing it for someone else, it would probably be a do-over. But it's for me and I can live with it. Besides, I'm ready to try out those Nu-Pastels!

Nice work,
I have also started an interest in watercolour and pastel pencils,
how do you find them each,
havent given a thought to drawing pencils myself,
still picking up tips, it's a very detailed process using pencils.

Great picture Ron I'm thinking of trying pencils for my next project......any suggestions on which ones are better than others? Right now, the only ones we have in our house are the kids' Crayola pencils! I've heard good things about Prismacolor pencils......what kind do you use?

Oooops.......well obviously you use prismacolor pencils! (Just re-read the top). Have you tried many other brands?

Retha,
I have used watercolor pencils by Derwent. Personally, I don't like them, wet or dry.
I have a set of Van Gogh pastel pencils which I am satisfied with.
Jess,
Yes, I use Prismacolor and haven't used any of the other major brands. I have tried Crayola colored pencils and they work pretty well for the price. They are a good choice for someone who wants to try colored pencils without having to purchase the more expensive brands.

I love the way you rendered his eyes. His personality shines thro. Do you like that paper? I have never been able to get it to behave for me. Do you use the *wrong* side?
I have just recently tried Coloursoft derwents and love them. Very creamy like prismas. I found them at Dick Blicks.

Thanks for the comments. Mayce is a female and was born ready to play.
Wat, I'm don't really like the texture of the Mi-Tientes paper but when I use it, I always use the smoother back or as you said, the "wrong" side.
I've never tried the Coloursoft pencils, but from your description, I may buy a few and try them.

Ron, I'm seeing such great art work with colored pencils in this forum that I'm fighting an itch to try it again. Thank you!

I love doing animals too. It's great to capture their personalities in what ever medium you choose. I've painted them in oil, acrylic, water color and graphite. About the only thing I haven't tried is color pencils, will have to try some time. Great work.

morning ron! please know that it had nothing to do with you....recently i have just stepped onto a hornets nest for doing the same type of posting in this site, and i just wanted to eh.....stop those buggers from biting me....so i removed what i had done in most threads.....
most? respond as you do....appreciating the side by sides....but occassionally ya just get bit on the butt for it...and it wasnt what i intend when i post them.......so know that its not something you have done...and i would be more than happy, pleased, to create them for ones who ask for it anytime...ANYTIME....~wink~...i love this lil dog of yours....i think you have nailed his personality....i want to go play ball with him!....

i checked my paper? since i am replying to ya.....and your right...no where on the printing does it say acid free! i cant believe it!...i would have never purchased something that wasnt! doh!!!! so thanks for the heads up....MUCHLY appreciated....

OWS,
Anytime you think that my work can be improved, tell me, if you think that by editing it in your computer and showing it to me is more direct, please do so. I think that no matter how well I do a painting there is always something that can improve, I might not fix the one posted (like if it is already listed on another site for sale), but will certainly remember the critique for future work. In all these years I have never stopped learning and trying different things, and I don't plan on stopping.

Ron, I really love this piece, her fur shines.

heather? thank you so much for leaving this msg....you put a smile on my face this morning!...what a wonderful way to wake up!....thank you so much, and i expect no less from anyone else here towards my work as well!!..if there are any questions, or comments or suggestions...i in turn wish them to be shared with me!....i totally agree, that an artist can never learn it all...and as soon as its thought they know enough..they stop learning and grow stagnant...may we all continue to grow!!!
