This is my first finished colored pencil drawing.  ..Just completed my first class and  love colored pencils.. I think I've found a new niche.    I'd be interested in your comments, suggestions, criticisms, etc.

Thanks,

Robin N.

Hi Robin,
I think you've done a very good job on your first colored pencil drawing. Is the class you're taking specifically a colored pencil class or a drawing class in general? What other mediums do you work in?
If I were doing this subject I think I would have used a dark colored paper, probably blue or green. That would eliminate the necessity of having to do so much work on the background. The pine needles are beautiful. There does seem to be some conflict with the colors where the needles overlap the cougars tail.(a yellowish look) But that may just be in the photo.
Colored pencil is my favorite medium. Keep up the good work and I hope you will continue to post your work.

Hi Ron..

Thanks so much for your feedback..  The class I just finished was one offered at the local community college..  6 weeks and a ton of information..  I like your idea of using a dark background paper/board to start with.  The yellow is part poor photography and part too-much-canary- yellow.

I've done some watercolor, for about a year..  I've been woodcarving for about 9 years and did some oil painting many years ago..  Once I started with the colored pencils I fell in love with them..

I love detail oriented work..  ..and have attached a picture of a 20-mule team I carved awhile back.  This was a 3-year project, the last year using only surgical scalpels

Thank you again for your feedback..!!

Robin,
You are very talented, in both painting and woodcarving, the mule team is beautiful work. I agree with Ron about the colored paper. The pine needles going over the tail could be darker green rather than lighter to "pop" them out and have the tail really recede behind them. Also I suggest a little more bark texture on the branches. This work is really wonderful for a first, and your drawing skills show. Keep it up and show us more.

Hi Robin....

I agree with Heather & Ron's comments about the pine needles and the tree bark. In response to your woodwork......beautiful! My stipplings usually take me 3-4 months to complete......sometimes makes me nuts! I can't IMAGINE a 3 year project! WOW!! Nice work!
