Hello Everybody! Just getting my feet wet on this site! So I am posting some of my earlier works. This is the first Colored Pencil Painting that I did! I had done several small pieces of individual items, but this is the first piece that I would call a Painting!
It's about 9 inches high by 15 inches wide. It was done an Strathmore 500 paper with Prismacolors. |

Great work! I agree this should be called a painting. We have had discussions about whether colored pencil work should be classified as drawing or painting. I guess it can be either, depending on how far it's taken. My favorite medium is colored pencil and I also use Prismacolors. I hope you will post some more of your work! |

| This is great! I love your composition. And doing this in CP must have taken you forever. I lack the patience needed to do something like this! Thanks so much for posting this painting! Gene |

Hi Ron! I just put a note on my pastel piece about posting this one, and now I see that you have already checked it out! Thanks for the vote that this should be called a painting. I burnish all my CP work and they look more like oil paintings than drawings. I like prismacolors for that reason, They are easy to build up layers of color. However, I have just received some Coloursoft pencils from Derwent in England and they are just soooo soft. They may become another favourite pencil along with Prismas!
Hi Heather, Joanne & Jim, Thank you for your kind words about my paintings. I am a late starter for an artist. Didn't start any kind of painting at all until I was 50 years old. Started with oils, but have given them up, then watercolor , then colored pencil and finally pastel. Now there is so much I want to do and so little time to do it!

Jean, You said you have given up oil painting. I hope you don't ever give up colored pencils! I have a set of Derwent watercolor pencils but I don't like the results I get from them. I've never seen the Coloursoft pencils by Derwent, but from your description, I would probably enjoy using them. Have you actually done a piece using them? I'll be watching for more of your work. |

Hi Ron! The Coloursoft are just coming out here in the States. Dick Blick listed them in their New Winter Sale Catalog. The reason I have mine is a short story....
I had purchased some New Derwent Graphitint Pencils and I couldn't get one of them to make a mark on paper. I E-Mailed Derwent and they said they would send me a replacement. They did and also included a 6 pack of the Coloursoft Pencils. I thought that was so nice of them that I did a " Leaf Study" using the red, yellow and green pencils from the six pack. I matted it and sent it to the young lady at Derwent, who had sent me the pencils, as a thank you. About a month later I was very surprised to get a package in the mail! It was a Tin of 36 Coloursoft Pencils with a letter telling me how much she had liked my "Leaf Study" and that she now has it hanging in her office! She is one of the people who had developed the pencils and was thrilled to get a "painting"!
Here is a photo of the "Leaf Study" |

I do need to make a correction to the size of "Left On the Doorstep" It's 9 inches high by 18" wide not 15 inches as stated earlier! Jean |

| No wonder she hung this in her office. It is beautiful, the color sings! I am sure she was very pleased to receive your gracious gift. Are these pencils like the Prismacolor? I have a 120 set of Prismacolor and found them oily and hard to blend, plus I couldn't get rid of the hazing cloudy effect. They are "the thick lead art pencils" as stated on the box. Maybe I am too used to pastels. |

Jean Beautiful Work! "Left on the Doorstep" must have taken forever to do! I am working on what I would call my first Colored Pencil Painting and it is taking me forever, it is a rather large portrait. I can't wait to see more of your work, love the vibrant color of "Leaf Study". |

Hi Heather! Glad you like mywork! Yes, the Coloursoft Pencils are like the Prismacolors! I think they maybe a little softer. I didn't seem to have to put down as many layers before I can burnish them. Colored Pencils are not as easy to blend as Pastel Pencils and are nowhere near as soft! They do tend to get what is called a "wax bloom"! This normally shows up on the darker colors. If you wipe it off with a soft cloth and spray a fixative on your painting it seems to keep the bloom from coming back ! Hope this helps!

Hi KathEliz! I think all CP Paintings take forever. That's why I don't do too many of them! I like to work in Watercolor and Pastel, and these go so much faster! But the CP apinting are fun to do and the color you can get is just fantastic! Will be looking forward to seeing your Portrait! Jean |

Thanks Becky and Ohsuzanna. I really enjoy working in colored Pencil.. I guess because I like detail work and with CP you can get all the detail you want.

Being new to all of this I have never seen color pencil "painting" before. WOW, I can't believe the beautiful work that can be done with them. You are all inspiring me to give yet another new (to me) medium a try. Thank you for sharing these beautiful pieces with us. Myrn |

Hello Myrn! I feel very honored that I have inspired you to try using CP. If I may suggest... Get at least a 72 piece set of pencils. This should give you mostly all the colors you will need! I use mostly Prismacolors as they are very soft and can be blended easily and also now the New Derwent Coloursoft pencils. These are just great, very soft and have a good range of colours. One of my favorite Papers to use is called Stonehenge. I think I have mentioned that earlier in the thread! But you can also use Arches Cover, Strathmore 500 and even Matboard! Hope you will give it a try and will be looking forward to seeing you post some of your work here!
