Sorry, this challenge is closed for entries. Click here to see the winner.
Click here to check out the August/September, 2008 Paint-Off challenge,"Water, water everywhere."
Summer weather is upon us--and none too soon. When I think of summer, I think of the outdoors--vacations, picnics and all kinds of fun-in-the-sun activities, including plein air painting. So why am I asking for a summer still life?
Just call me contrary. But then, all those summer outdoor activities can be represented with a still life, can't they? I'm hoping this challenge will stimulate you to assemble some props you might not otherwise have considered.
So pull out your art medium of choice and show us what summer means to you.
Here are the details:
- To enter, you must be a registered user of the Artist Network forums. To register, click on the word "Register" toward the top of this page and on the right. If you're already a forum member, just make sure you're logged in.
- Your artwork must be a still life representing something associated with summer. A sentence or two of explanatory text is encouraged, but not mandatory.
- Your artwork may be any style from trompe l’oeil realism to abstract.
- All media are acceptable, including collage--just keep your work basically two-dimensional.
- New work only please.
- Include your artwork's name, dimensions and medium when you post it. (Click here for posting instructions.) Do not use the "Quick Reply" area to post art. Instead, click on the "Add Reply" icon. You'll find it on the left after the last message. Look for a green pencil on a yellow background.
- NEW RULE: Those who have won an All-Media Paint-Off challenge within the past year may post their art, but they are not eligible to win this challenge. If you're unsure wether you're eligible or not, email me at artistsnetwork@fwpubs.com
As always, the winner of this challenge will recieve a $50.00 gift certificate for North Light Books.
This
challenge closes at noon EST on Monday, July 28, 2008. Then forum users
and newsletter subscribers will have a chance to vote on their favorite
entry from finalists selected by the editors of The Artist's Magazine.
Happy painting,

I call this one "In the Garden." One of my favorite places to be in early summer, is working in my flower beds or just enjoying them once they have come into bloom. These were just a few things from my garden things I set up to paint. It is 11 x 14 oil on canvas.

Hi, Lil,
You're already a registered user. That's why you were able to post your message. You didn't see the word "register" at the top of this page because you were already logged in. In your case, just ignore the first bullet point.
Looking forward to seeing your entry!

This one is called "Colors of Summer" . It is inspired by the state fair entries. People bring the best of their gardens for display. The colors of the fruit and vegetables are always so beautiful, each one a work of art. I set this up on a plate on my kitchen floor because I like the way the morning light comes in on things. It is an 11x14 pastel on sanded paper.

Hi, Priti (and anyone else who's having trouble posting art).
Your work should show up along with your message, so it looks as if you're running into a bit of trouble. Let me know what happens when you post (or try to post) and I'll try to help you. You can either send me a private message at artistsnetwork@fwpubs or you can describe your problem in a message on the forum (sometimes members who have had a similar problem give terrific advice). Either way, do let us try to help you. Just describe what happens when you attempt to post art, and we'll go from there.

Hello, Mette,
There are no rules in the All-Media Paint-Off against posting your art on another forum. The contest does encourage new art, though, since one object of the prompts is to inspire artists to paint, paint and paint some more. What constitutes new art? Ideally, something painted for the contest, but if you recently finished something that just happens to fit the contest challenge, I'll accept that as new, too.
That brings up another point. Entries for the Summer Still Life challenge should be, well, still lifes. I love seeing all entries to Paint-Off challenges, but regretfully, for this particular challenge, if the entry is not a still life, it will not be eligible to win.
Happy painting,

Thanks Nancie, this summer i have set a goal to paint a lot - try to do a painting a day!!!!!!!!!!!to improve my work. Doing a painting with an Indian theme was a challenge from an artist friend. As i have lived in this country for all my adult life (I am not young, only young at heart), working on an Indian theme was hard for me and i had to dig deep into childhood memories. So your comments mean a lot. If you want to see more of my work, please check out my blog - http://priti-fine-art.blogspot.com/

Haven't been on this board much but I'm posting for this event. The following is a fruit arrangement done in acrylics on w/c paper. It's 5 x 7 using the watercolor effect. Lil
