Hi Everyone,
Thank you all for posting your paintings here.
They are all very beautiful.
It's really fun and excited to look at.
It likes a flower festival in real life.

-Retha, you did a lovely job.
I never try to work on a digital art before but I am interested to know how you do it.
Does it take long and a lot of patience to do one painting?
Anna.

Carroll, the peace rose is so lovely. Doing it in colored pencil must have taken you quite a long time. I love the closeup view of the flower........JMArtist...........the light on the front of the building is outstanding. If you hadn't identified it as a watercolor, I would have thought it was an oil. I love the shadow of the pump and watering can on the white building. Very good painting............Gene

Hi,
I don't normally do flowers, but here we go. Got to
start somewhere and were starting with flowers, so here's
my pastel 8 X 10 of a rose.
Thanks,
Jim

Jim, your rose is great! I like the way you handled the dew drops. Did you get the whole thing on your photo? Otherwise, I think you placed it too high on your paper, though. But you can always crop it to improve your composition. You are enjoying pastels, aren't you? I can't wait to get back to painting.....Gene

Hi Gene and Suzanna,
Thanks for the comments on the Rose. Not real happy on the detail
on this one. It's tuff to get blending and crisp edges in such a small area.
I wish I knew how to do that. I've tried the blending sticks, but I must not
be using them right. They just seem to move the pastel around and not blend.
Oh well, we have till June. Maybe I'll come up with something else by then

Hi Jim, I am having trouble getting the crisp edges too. I really think you did a good job. I find it hard to get the crisp edges with pastels. I have used a errasor stick that comes in a pen like, sharpened the end with a pencil sharpener and used that. It did help but I am still not happy with it. That is why I have not posted mine yet. I am thinking about doing my flowers in acylics. I am still not sure what mediam I want to use. But I plan to come up with one of them for sure.

I love all the work here so far. We are having terrible weather just now, and nothing is in bloom yet. Sea was 12 ft waves and at the bottom of my street the spray went higher than the second floor of a house across the street from the sea wall.

Anyway, just wanted to say I love all the works posted so far, hope to get something done too.

As for detail with pastels, if the pencil is pushing the pastel around it needs to be sprayed to fix it and then when dry it will take the pencil lines. If you know where you want detail work done, put just thin layers of pastel down so the pencil doesn't have to fight that area. If spray darkens the light colors, after detail work put another layer of pastel where you want it brighter. Hope this helps.

Thanks Heather,
It looks like I maybe using the wrong pastels for detail too.
On Dick Blicks site it mentioned using hard pastels like Nupastel for
the base because they have less pigment and more binder, and using
the soft pastels like the Rembrandts for additional layering for more vivid
colors, since they have more pigment. Man there's a lot to learn!
Thanks again!

Hi Jim.......For really sharp details, I use my NuPastels or my Carbo-Othello pastel pencils. Actually, the Rembrandts you are using aren't really that soft. I consider them quite hard in comparison to Sennelier, Great American Artist, Schminke, etc. Now, if you want soft pastels, those are the ones to try. They have great colors, also. What I love so much is that you can buy one or two pastels at a time and experiment with them, without shelling out for a whole set. And, also you can mix and match all the various kinds. Don't you love pastels? ............Gene

Jim,
You are correct, the base should be the harder pastel and as the layers go up the really soft is the final layer. sometimes on skin I will use a softer before final layer so I can blend it like butter, but skin doesn't need sharp lines so it doesn't matter. In my little miniature cat pastels I do, it is mostly the pencils, and then I used the soft pastel for the bulk in the fur so I can blend it to make it look softer. I also spray them because they are so small. I spray very lightly twice, drying between coats.

Anna,
Some digital paintings take long, other not you just have to know your programes, I started on Coreldraw graphic suite, then Adobe photopaint, and Gimp as wel as artweaver and Dogwaffle, know them all now,
That is the important part. I use them all just depending on what results I want.

Retha

If at first you dont succeed.........don't ever give up!
