Every person sees the world in his or her own way, and creative expression involves the presentation of that unique vision. That's why, when a group of artists is given the same subject matter to paint, each will come up with an entirely different piece from the others. For this challenge you are to exhibit your artistic individuality by creating a still life that includes these five objects: a feather, a key, a candle, a scarf and a pen.
Here are the details:
- To enter, you must be a registered user of the Artist Network forums. To register, click on the word "Register" toward the top of this page and on the right. If you're already a forum member, just make sure you're logged in.
- Your artwork must be a still life that includes these five objects: a feather, a key, a candle, a scarf and a pen. Other objects may also be included.
- Your artwork may be any style from trompe l’oeil realism to somewhat abstract (objects must be identifiable).
- All media are acceptable, including collage—just keep your work basically two-dimensional.
- New work only please.
- Include your artwork's name, dimensions and medium when you post it. (Click here for posting instructions.) Do not use the "Quick Reply" area to post art. Instead, click on the "Add Reply" icon. You'll find it on the left after the last message. Look for a green pencil on a yellow background.
- Those who have won an All-Media Paint-Off challenge within the past year may post their art, but they are not eligible to win this challenge. If you're unsure whether you're eligible or not, email me at artistsnetwork@fwmedia.com
- Multiple entries are permissible, but no more than one entry by the same artist will be selected as a finalist.
As always, the winner of this challenge will recieve a $50.00 gift certificate for North Light Books.
This challenge closes at noon EST on Monday, April 6, 2009. Then forum users and newsletter subscribers will have a chance to vote on their favorite entry from finalists selected by the editors of The Artist's Magazine.

Just a few quick questions : Does a quill pen count as a feather or a pen?
Also: Can it count as both a feather AND a pen?

Great question, Dancing Dragon. The official answer is that a quill pen counts as both a feather and a pen.

I haven't checked this site in a while so i expected to see some entries in the Five Objects challenge by now, but there aren't any. maybe I'll do one this time. The subject is more appealing to me than #13 challenge.

This is my first time ever posting here. I read about this challenge on my Artist Network email and thought I would try it out and enter. This image is called BookWorm. I had already drawn the picture but when I saw this challence I added the scarf and although I already had the quill pen I added and additional pen. It is on 8x10 Stonehenge paper. It is watercolor pencils and ink. |

| Sorry the image isn't clearer but when I had to make it smaller the pen and ink lost some of it's clarity. |

Well, I'm new at this, and this is the very first painting I've ever posted on-line! It's watercolor on Strathmore Aquarius II, and is 11" x 14". I took a beginner class last week and painted a little snow scene, so I used that as my starting point, added the little worried snowman gazing at my candle, my bowling locker keys, a bluejay feather I keep around, and called my painting "Unnecessary Worry." It's silly, but hopefully will bring some smiles!

This was an interesting and fun challenge. I call my entry "Odds and Ends", size is 6.5x10; medium is watercolor.
The blue angular shape is the scarf with a knot in it. The scarf was a gift from my Mom. The feather is from a red shafted flicker that I've had for a long time embellishing a weaving. The pen is one I inherited from my Dad. The candle, though ordinary in itself, was in one of my favorite candlesticks that was a wedding gift. And, the key was my house key. My goal in this painting was to celebrate and honor the everyday odds and ends in our life.

Size: (original) 6"x10.5"
Media: Colored Pencil (Prismacolor Premier)
As with other contributors, the objects seemed romantic and suggestive of mystery, so here is "Dear John". Finding the objects was fun, too, an antique pheasant feather hat and scarf, an old key and the difficult object (around here, anyway) a pen that doesn't read "BIC" on the side!

This is my second version of "Odds and Ends", size is 6.5x10; medium is watercolor. I felt there was still much to be gained by exploring this wonderful assortments of objects.
As stated in the previous version, each object has a personal attachment. My goal in this painting was to celebrate and honor the

After a hard day's ride we make it back to the cabin; open the door with that old key; light the cande; throw the scarf over the back of the chair; write down the list of chores for tomorrow; toss the hat on the table; drop the pen on the hat and head for a tall cool one ...... OK... so the air is a little thin up here at this elevation .... but life is grand in the hills...........
