See the winner here!

Going green seems to be a trend these days, and what a great trend to jump on board with!  I'm sure many of you are making little changes here and there to go green, and every little bit sure does help.  So, why not go green with your art?  That's your challenge:  create a painting with some kind of recycled material - such as a tool, a surface, a medium or a component added to the artwork.

The recycled item or items should have a significant impact on the finished work, and please report what recycled tools or materials you use. You will be judged both on the quality of your artwork and on creativity demonstrated in your use of one or more recycled products.

Here are the details:

    * To enter, you must be a registered user of the Artist Network message board. To register, click on the word "Register" toward the top of this page and on the right. If you're already a message board member, just make sure you're logged in.
    * You may allow portions of your painting surface to show. For example, if your paper or canvas is white, you may preserve some of those white areas.
    * Your artwork may be any style from trompe l’oeil realism to abstract.
    * All media are acceptable, including collage—just keep your work basically two-dimensional.
    * New work only please.
    * Include your artwork's name, dimensions and medium when you post it. A sentence or two of background information about your artwork is encouraged, but not necessary.
    * Click here for posting instructions. Do not use the "Quick Reply" area to post art. Instead, click on the "Add Reply" icon. You'll find it on the left after the last message. Look for a green pencil on a yellow background.
    * Those who have won an All-Media Paint-Off challenge within the past year may post their art, but they are not eligible to win this challenge. If you're unsure whether you're eligible or not, email me at artistsnetwork@fwmedia.com
    * Multiple entries are permissible, but no more than one entry by the same artist will be selected as a finalist.

As always, the winner of this challenge will recieve a $50.00 gift certificate for North Light Books.

This challenge closes at noon EST on Monday, September 28, 2009. Then forum users and newsletter subscribers will have a chance to vote on their favorite entry from finalists selected by the editors of The Artist's Magazine.

Artists Network thanks message board member hhellebat for submitting the idea for this challenge.  Do you have a Paint-Off challenge idea? Click here to share it with us.

Happy painting!

So then are we restricted to color? It sounds just like the last paint off challenge - blue and orange.

No, sorry, you are not limited.  This was my first time posting the paint-off challenge and when I copy-pasted from Holly's previous post, I forgot to delete that part!  Thank you for catching it

Pastels being a nearly pure pigment of the earth, I thought it appropriate of a recent exhibit of that name.  The work was done on recycled craft paper and even framed with repurposed materials.   That  resulted in the commission for this piece "Wilted Sunflower:

Cathy Brown

Wilted Sunflower  11x 14  soft pastel on recycled craft paper.

Additional topics are: "VIEW FROM MY WINDOW" and "ROCKS AND WATER".  Both conjure up interesting concepts.

I'm new here, but decided to enter this challenge because I use recycled materials in a a lot of my paintings and collages. This is a recent one where I used ALL recycled materials.

The ink stained papers are tan packing paper that came in some boxes I received in the mail. There is also cardboard from the box that I painted with acrylics. Other things are pieces of the inside of a lightbulb box...wood shavings from cutting down a tree in the yard that is partly painted...gold cord from a christmas package...a piece of blue metalic thread I found somewhere...a piece of textured plastic from a candy container...rubber backing from framing bumpons that went in the circles...an edge of an old watercolor painting...and a tab from a soft drink. All of this was adhered to a 6 X 6 canvas using matte medium or glue. My piece is named, "Trash to Treasure"

This is a painting made on a recycled canvas. The name of the painting is Portal to a dream and it is 18x24 size and the medium is acrylic, The original painting was blue water with bubbles. You can still see some bubbles if you look closely.

All Summer I have been experimenting with recycling styrofoam meat trays. I cut each tray into 4" squares, distress them with acetone, then paint them with acrylic. They end up looking like t terra cotta. Sometimes I add tissue paper or gold leaf, and in this case I added a skeltonized leaf and a vintage bird card. My framer sells me leftover mat board, so that is recycled as well. The finished framed size is 11x11 inches. Sherry Thurner

These are old oars that I recycled . I painted them with acrylic, sealed with varnish and embellished with scraps of leather suede, feathers and pony beads.

Hello everyone, I'm new to the FOrum & the idea of blogging. But Ive decided it's time to step out of my comfort zone & enter the green competition. I'm almost finished with my entry. But I'm getting hung up n the how-to's of doing a blog entry & getting my entry from here to there.
-to Brighteyes, the folds in your nude1 are very good.
-to DaArtis, your palm branch mask is spooky good. Reminds me of an episdoe of Twilight Zone & creatures from Star Trek.

Recycling items is a wonderful way to create and gives old items a new "look". These are recycled roof slates with acrylic paintings on them. Each is sealed to withstand the weather elements, so they can be hung outdoors. The surface of the slate adds to the texture of the paintings, and the holes used to nail them to a roof are used to tie the leather laces through for hanging. - Nan

Mosaic work is another way to recycle media. Both the welcome sign and the frame are covered with broken pieces from plates & dinnerware. Pieces are snipped for size & shape, then glued into position. Then grout is applied to all spaces, smoothed and sealed. Different color grout adds to the look, as the green used in the welcome sign. - Nan
