Susan - beautiful work & I love your background! I think many of us got a bit confused on this one (glad I'm not the only one). I see Heather used 3 orange and 3 blue pencils, and Joy mentions 2 different blues in hers. Tami I think you're ok, unless there is both Indigo & Pthalo blues in the art. And can Burnt Sienna & Cad Scarlet count as an orange?

These are all beautiful pieces of work, but I guess some of us are starting over if we want to enter for the contest. At least I'm in good company!

Thanks for all the comments on my bluebird painting. To answer your questions...

Cad Scarlett is an red-orange, which seems to qualify under the rule:
You may pick the particular shades of blue and orange you use--any two colors with at least slight orange and blue tints are acceptable.

Burnt Sienna is usually considered a neutralized orange in any color theory book you look at.

No, Priti, there's not a drop of black paint in my bluebird painting. Prussian Blue is a very dark, very intense cool blue pigment. Add a touch of red-orange (its complement), and it dulls down to a lovely bluish black. You'd get a similar result using phthalo blue, indigo, or Payne's grey. (Most brands of indigo and Payne's grey are actually blended from a mixture of black and phthalo blue pigments.)

Susan - I hope I didn't upset you with my questions. I was not questioning the validity of your painting, but asking about the Scarlet & Burnt Sienna. I actually thought of using Burnt Sienna but dismissed it thinking it didn't qualify as an orange. Thank you for your info regarding the colors, you obviously know your stuff when it comes to color theory!

Hello Holly,

For the Limited Palette challenge, is burnt sienna OK for the orange color?

Hello, lynne,

Good question. My answer is yes. Burnt sienna qualifies as an orange. For the purposes of this challenge, you can stop reading here. If the name on your paint says burnt sienna, it's acceptable.

If you want to look into the question a bit more closely, you can keep reading. Just remember, for this challenge, if the paint container is labeled burnt sienna, it's acceptable.

The trouble with color names is that they are not used consistently. One manufacturer may have a burnt sienna with a more obvious tint toward orange; another may not. The difference can be in the pigment used; just because the name says "burnt sienna" doesn't mean a burnt sienna pigment (PBr7) was actually used). The manufacturing process can also change the pigment appearance. Check out these links (Be patient; they may open slowly.):

http://www.goldenpaints.com/products/color/heavybody/colors/1020infopg.php
This link to the Golden Paint website gives a thorough report on their burnt sienna. Note that the masstone appears very brown, but the undertone reveals the orange tint.

http://www.fineartstore.com/Catalog/tabid/365/List/1/CategoryID/70/Level/a/Default.aspx?SortField=UnitCost%2CUnitCost
This link to fineartstore.com shows a wax paint that looks very brown. Look closely, though, and you'll see a bit of orange tint.

http://www.winsornewton.com/products/water-colours/cotman-water-colour/colour-chart/burnt-sienna/
The Cottman watercolor swatch on this Winsor & Newton Web page shows a definite orange tint.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burnt_sienna
Here's a Wikipedia photo of a burnt sienna powdered pigment, which definitely shows an orange tint.

I encourage you to look closely at your particular brand of burnt sienna. See if it has the PBr7 pigment code on the container, indicating a true burnt sienna pigment was used. Then, for your own edification, look closely at the paint itself to see if you detect an orange tint.

But again, to keep things simple for this challenge, any paint labeled burnt sienna is acceptable as an orange.

Happy painting,

Holly

Hi, I had to keep making my image smaller and smaller so it would upload.  How do you make the image larger and still be able to send it?

By the way, I used Pyrol Orange and Cobalt Blue.  I liked the challenge and I think this is a good exercise for all artists to pay attention to values.

Try setting the dpi at 72 and also changing one of dimensions to 5 inches (click "Constrain Proportions" and "Resample Image," and the other dimension will change to scale). Then, if you have the option, when you save the image, use "Save for Web." That should give you a larger image that's still under 100 dpi.

Holly,

Here is my painting for the orange and blue challenge.  I used Gamblin Oils Transparent Earth Orange, Radiant Blue and white.  I used a rub on method using only my finger and a shoprag...no brushes used at all.  It was so much fun!!

Neighborhood Boys #1.

I drew this from memory after watching the boys  in front of my house.

This is watercolor on Strathmore 140 lb. The colors are orange and French Ultramarine Blue, Size ll x 15. I did this first but didn't like what I got by mixing orange and French Ultramarine.

Neighborhood Boys #2

After seeing an entree with the mixture of Thalo blue and Orange I redid this painting with those colors. Again 11x15 watercolor Strathmore 140lb.

I also made some changes because I sometimes don't know when to leave well enough alone.

Why be Blue?

4"X6", watercolor on Langton Prestige paper, phthalo blue and cad orange

I had done a pencil sketch of this design and then started painting it using various palettes.  I had just done this in blue and orange when I saw your notice.  Great fun!
