Painting white subject matter involves more colors than many people think. In fact, convincing whites are quite colorful in their subtle way. For this challenge, show your proficiency with whites by creating artwork with predominantly white subject matter. The possibilities are plentiful—snow, flowers, shells, china, silver, crystal, fabric—the list could go on and on.
Here are the details:
- To enter, you must be a registered user of the Artist Network forums. To register, click on the word "Register" toward the top of this page and on the right. If you're already a forum member, just make sure you're logged in.
- Your artwork must include prominent white subject matter, although other colors may be included. White-on-white subjects are encouraged, but not required.
- Your artwork may be any style from trompe l’oeil realism to abstract.
- All media are acceptable, including collage—just keep your work basically two-dimensional.
- New work only please.
- Include your artwork's name, dimensions and medium when you post it. (Click here for posting instructions.) Do not use the "Quick Reply" area to post art. Instead, click on the "Add Reply" icon. You'll find it on the left after the last message. Look for a green pencil on a yellow background.
- Those who have won an All-Media Paint-Off challenge within the past year may post their art, but they are not eligible to win this challenge. If you're unsure whether you're eligible or not, email me at artistsnetwork@fwpubs.com
- Multiple entries are permissible, but no more than one entry by the same artist will be selected as a finalist.
- Not sure how to go about painting whites? Pick up some tips and check out some examples from these resources:
As always, the winner of this challenge will recieve a $50.00 gift certificate for North Light Books.
This challenge closes at noon EST on Monday, January 26, 2009. Then forum users and newsletter subscribers will have a chance to vote on their favorite entry from finalists selected by the editors of The Artist's Magazine.
Happy painting,

I don't know if we are to include detail shots, but here is one to show how I used blue to indicate a cold atmosphere.

The most challenging thing for me when I paint white is keeping the mid tones dark enough so that the highlights pop out. |

Hi - I am a first timer here! The attached painting for the challenge is a watercolor titled "Daisy Days" and is 11x15. I love exagerating colors, especially in white flowers.

| "Baby Daisy" Oil/Acrylic. 9x12 on hardboard panel. This is my experiment with white and oil paints. I've always been a little shy of using white because its so hard to get all the color in and get it realistic. When I saw this challenge I figured might as well give it a try! Hope you enjoy! |

A dense planting of pure white oriental lilies on huge stalks is an impressive sight! The cloud of fragrance hovering over these blossoms was heady. This piece is titled "Casa Blanca", 20" x 14" on Arches cold-pressed. |

| Very quickly done white on white acrylic 11x14 on canvas. This is much more of impressionist than realism. Just thought I would throw one in happy new year. |
