Start your creative gears spinning. We're taking a different "turn" with the Super Sirals Paint-Off challenge. The object is to include in your art a design or object with a spiral, coil or helix.
Spirals and coils are more common than you may realize. Part of the fun of this challenge will be seeing the different ways people "wind up" presenting the subject matter. From lollipop patterns and baby-hair curls to whirlpools and hurricanes, the creative possibilities many--and as huge as the Milky Way. And don't limit yourself to paintings of objects with spirals--patterns and backgrounds may also contain the distinctive spiral or coil pattern.
Here are the details:
- Your artwork must feature at least one plainly visible spiral, coil, or helix, although this item need not be the main part of the work.
- Your artwork may be any style from trompe l’oeil realism to abstract.
- All media are acceptable, including collage--just keep your work basically two-dimensional.
- New work only please.
- Include your artwork's name, dimensions, and medium when you post it. (Click here for posting instructions.) Also mention how you have worked the spiral(s) into your artwork.
As always, the winner of this challenge will recieve a $50.00 gift certificate for North Light Books.
This challenge closes at noon EST on Monday, June 2, 2008. Then forum users and newsletter subscribers will have a chance to vote on their favorite entry from finalists selected by the editors of The Artist's Magazine.

Okay,
I'll start this one off with a fantasy painting. I call it "Stairway to Heaven". I tried to depict spiraling clouds and smoke reaching for heaven. The birds are drawn by the spirals. They fly higher and higher with the spirals. This is oils on canvas. 18 X 24.

Good for you, Jim! I was wondering who would be the first to take the plunge with this challenge. I had hoped this prompt would push the imaginations of our forum artists, and you've stepped up to the plate in good form.
Okay, let's see what the rest of you can come up with. I'm using the word spiral loosely in this challenge--coils, helixes, whorls, curlycues--they're all acceptable. If you're uncertain whether your idea qualifies, feel free to ask.

Ok, This is called "Branchling", it is watercolor on 9"x12".
The spiralling is in the main stem and also in the tendrills. |

I'm completely new to this so ,even though I know this piece isn't very special (It was my first digital drawing ever) and it does have spirals! This is more of an experiment in submitting a picture than anything else and we'll see how it goes.
The name is "Daisy Deluxe". I really don't know the size other than that I resized it to 300 pixels. |

| Robin, I am in a similar position. I found this to be an interesting site and the challenge sounded interesting as well. Placing directions for entering a work in the Challenge Description would be so helpful to us novices to this situation. |

if you'd like to include an image with a new post (as I did below):
1. Scroll down past Message "Body" to "Message Attachments"
2. Click on "Choose File" and select an image from your computer's files
3. Click on "Submit"
Please note: Image files may not exceed 100kbs If you
still have trouble posting art, check your image's file name for
spaces. One of our forum members says she wasn't able to post her art
until all spaces were removed.
To change an image you've posted:
1. Click on your post
2. Hit "Edit" and scroll down to "Message Attachments"
3. Click on "Delete" beside the appropriate file

This is my first try at showing a piece of my artwork outside of my family and in such a public space. "The Yellow Blouse" is a 22X30 watercolor and the soft coils and curves are the result of creating the composition.

| Although most of my work is representational and done in oils; I live in Florida, a state where spirals are very important. Hurricanes are huge spiral storms and the concept of these storms merge with paint in my work now and then.
This mixed media piece on watercolor paper is called Skydancing Second Month. It measures 24x36 inches framed. Spirals repeat in various forms from the key center of a storm to the smaller side eddies.
The title refers to the movement of the often devastating storms as they traverse the sky. It was painted in the second month of our six month hurricane season. |
