Sorry, this Paint-Off challenge is closed for entries.
For our next prompt, we're asking forum members to take a look at the
artist in the mirror. Create a self-portrait in any media, with the
only stipulation being that it must be completed in one half-hour. The
prompt ends December 1, 2007.
After the deadline, we'll let forum users and newsletter
subscribers vote on their favotie painting, once the editors have
narrowed things down. I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

This is my entry into the 30 min self-portrait challenge. My self-portrait was created on 1/4 sheet of 140 lb. paper which I kept wet and drew the portrait with the sharpened end of a paintbrush dipped into watercolor (sable.) I looked into the bathroom mirror and had a ready supply of water!

As part of The Learning & Product Expo: Art! in Pasadena I took a class called "Orange Eyelids and Green Lashes" taught by Julie Fish.
What fun! First and foremost Ms. Fish was well prepared and a good teacher, unlike the first class I had attended last Friday.
I took the class because I thought it might be fun and it certainly was. I learned a bit about Fauvism which I didn't know anything about. I had never used acrylics and I was able to explore using two different brands with two distinct properties on two different self portraits. I also took the class because I have always wanted to do a self portrait but never really had the courage to try and I thought this was a good way to get started. After all.. the orange eyelids would attract the attention and no one would care if the self portrait looked like me.
Well.. the class was a success. I painted. I learned. I had fun. This was the best way to end the Expo.... Maybe I'll be back next year.
What do you think about my self portrait???? Is it "me".??

My self-portrait is an acrylic 5"x7" painting on illustration board. Because this was done in the allotted 30 minutes, it may only resemble me a little. I could have used a lot more time. My favorite colors, plum and green, are in the background and shirt.
Thank you for this challenge! I have been thinking of doing a self-portrait and this got me motivated to do one. Now I'd like to do one in oil and spend more that 30 minutes on it!

Just to show the first one in watercolour, I also have been threatening to do one again, just found the time limit restricting and a challenge.

| This is a contour drawing with an "Elegant Writer" caligraphy pen in black then wet the lines with a brush to get the "bleed". This was done in 20 minutes in response to a challenge I posted on my blog "Creativity Journey" |

Hi Myrna, Your contour lines are lovely - so realistic and emotional at the same time. I love this portrait. Barb |

Does it have to be a self portrait? I've amazed myself with a portrait of a man that I did in 40 minutes or less and would love to enter it.

Hello, srapp, For this challenge, you need to stick to the 30-minute self-portrait. Your idea is a good one, though. Chances are, a future Paint-Off challenge will address the non-self portrait (although probably not for several months). By the way, if you or anyone else who's reading this has an idea for a Paint-Off challenge, feel free to make your suggestion on this forum. All ideas are welcome. Holly

Hi:
This is my portrait but when I finished it doesn't look anything like me. The woman in the portrait may have my pose and hat but she looks twenty years younger and more beautiful.
After I finished, I noticed dry paints had curded up on her but I couldn't go back to get them out because my 30 minutes was up. Now she has texture and imperfection on her skin. And I am not going to do another one. It was quite a challenge as it is. I used the smallest canvas panel I could find and lucky that I got variety of cheap premixed paints from a craft store, so I didn't loose time mixing them.
It is acrylic on 5" x 7" canvas panel. |

It's been a long time since I drew myself. I forgot how hard it is to look at myself for so long! I think it reflects my current sence of exhaustion and sadness. Thanks - Nick |

I didn't realize that pencil was allowed . . . so I experimented (I've only ever done self-portraits in pencil). I have only one day a month when there is some time for artwork, so here are my attempts.
#1 is brown & black caligraphy pen. I wanted to try the wash, but ran out of time (this last is going to be a refrain on this challenge, I think!).
#2 is done in pastels (without a preliminary drawing). No, I'm not really cross-eyed!
#3 is my first attempt with watercolors at a figure painting.

All three were done in an 8.5X11 sketchbook. Nothing fancy.

And I do smile, too! (I think I was concentrating too hard!) I'm just glad that realism is not the final goal here . . . because I don't think anyone would recognize me from these drawings (except perhaps for the habit and moles).
