Sorry, this Paint-Off challenge is closed to entries.
To inspire and motivate, this new forum is for users to post their work (regardless of medium) in response to a prompt. In celebration of the arrival of spring, we've decided to hold a paint-off--any flower, your choice. But please, new stuff only. The idea is to get you going, so no dusty musty works you've had sitting around. Don't forget to include medium and dimensions. Let's keep comments to a minimum so space remains free to others, and let's also stick to one forum thread. We'll start another thread for the next prompt. OK, rev up your brushes: You have until June 1, 2007, when the Flower Power challenge will be closed. Happy painting! Lisa, Associate Editor/Forum Administrator |

This is a great idea. When I get a moment to myself I will make a sketch or something for the "Flower Power" section. My daffodils should be in blooms soon. I have always heard the phrase " Flower Power" used for/or as strengh. I suppose they do have and give strength. A matter of perspective. Happy Painting to you too. Lisa. |

Beautifully done. It is perfect like the flower itself. I see this and I can't wait to see the tulips in my garden. The smell of the green grass and the feel of the soil in my hands. I am inspired. I keep thinking of my flower that I will paint with each day. Thanks. I most certainly admire those that handle pastel so gracefully. I like the shading and blending that you did. Johanna |

Anna! This is just gorgeous! Makes me a little reluctant to post as I'm pretty new to colored pencil and have a lot to learn! But, if I can do it, here's a Japanese Magnolia. It's colored pencil, 8x10 cropped to 5x7 on a highly textured card stock (not a good idea for colored pencil!) I'm waiting on a paper and colored pencil order so used what I had. The photo reference is from an online copyright free photo site. |

Hi Anna, Wow, you're really fast. It's very beautiful. I always love the colors you use in your painting. It looks very smooth like oil. Anna.

This is a wonderful topic! So glad that this forum is finally starting. Question...I finishing a small painting of the spring flowering plants surrounding our home. Do you want paintings of individual flowers, or may a garden-type painting be submitted? Claudia |

| Jang, your colored pencil painting is lovely. No need to apologize for anything. I especially like the composition. I like the way you have the flower going off the right side of the paper. My question, how do you get your name imprinted onto your photo. Do you have a special program that will do it once it is on your computer? Thanks for any information you can give me in regard to that. Thanks for posting your Japanese Magnolia.........Retha, I am always intrigued with your digital art. Do you start with one of your own photos? I have Adobe Photoshop II on my computer, but haven't done much with it so far. ...Gene |

Gene, thank you for your nice comments on my painting. As far as a watermark goes, it would depend on what software you have. I make up several different ones & keep them in a folder to use when I need one (I have some really cool ones! lol). Since you have PhotoShop, I think it will create one almost automatically but I'm not sure as I don't have it. The best advice I can give is to do a Google search for watermark+tutorial+PhotoShop (or whatever software you have.) You do need to have some kind of graphic software that has the ability to use layers. There is even some good free software (for PC - probably Macs also) if you don't have one. Using a watermark is important as I have heard that there are people who surf sites like this in order to steal graphics to re-sell. There was even a report about someone (or company) in China who was stealing paintings from artist's websites & selling them very cheaply as prints. The prints were very poor quality, of course, but they were evidently selling enough of them to make it worthwhile. A watermark won't keep anyone from stealing your work but it will make it harder for them. It also helps to keep your post size as small as feasible and also compress as much as you can & still have it look ok. If you save and post your work as a jpg/jpeg, that will also help as a jpg looses quality every time it's saved. You can also dither it slightly which will also affect quality to the point that it can't be reprinted. I think we, as artists, can see the real quality of a painting and not posting a top-notch picture of it shouldn't be a problem here. It seems that no matter what you do, when you scan or resize or whatever for posting, it doesn't look the same as the original anyway! If you absolutely can't figure out how to make a watermark, let me know & I'll see if I can help you out. jang |

| I'm not a flower person. Even planting them is not an exercise I enjoy, but I do love scences filled with the multiple colors of flowers and blooming trees. This is a view from our second-floor back deck, of our neighbors' gardens. Luckily they love to gardening and we enjoy the fruits of their labor and aching backs. This Maine coastal village view includes lilacs, azalea bushes, wild pear trees and our red maples bordering our driveway. It is an acrylic, 8x10" painting on canvas board. I realize that I have overdone the details, but it impossible for me to convey the lushness of these gardens without the hundreds of dots of colors that make up this view. Simplicity is not a skill I've perfected yet. Claudia |

| I love to paint roses. The title is Just One (rose). It is an oil on an archival panel 9 x 12 inches unframed. |

| Claudia, what a great painting. I'm a "detail" person and don't feel that you over-did anything. Thanks for sharing. Jang, thanks for all the information about the watermark. As I am beginning to be a more successful artist, I find I am beginning to be more concerned about copyrights of my paintings, etc. I'm getting very anxious to get up and back to painting after seeing all of these great florals............Gene |

Nice work Carroll! I love the brilliant color in the center of the rose. All of the work here looks great! And it's awesome that there are already a variety of mediums on display here.

I generally don't do flower images, but rather just having flowers in it. Here's something I did to have in an up coming flower themed show at Christopher Gallery in Stony Brook NY this month. "Garden View" 11" X 14" Watercolor. |
