What are the laws covering painting a copy of another painting?
Can I sell it? |

If you are in the United States of America, by all means go to the U.S. Copyright page on the web and at least read the basics. Here is the address:
http://www.copyright.gov
(To be certain, I am NO expert on law, or art...... but thought the link might help you) |

| I'd strongly follow the advise of reading up on copyright rules in the U.S. , you may even want to contact a copyright attorney.
Is the work you are considering to sell a copy of an old master or a living artist? If a living artist, (and I'm no expert), I think you'd be stepping into very dangerous waters by trying to sell a copy of their work and could be headed for a hole lotta trouble. If a deceased artist, such as an old master (Corbet, Reniour, etc.) I'd be sure to title it something like this:
"Your Own Title"
inspired by: - Seurat, Afternoon on the Grande Jatte"
I'd also be sure that you don't do an exact copy, choose elements (design, focal point, etc.) - dead on copies make people suspicious of conterfiet work, especially if it is going to be presented for sale and could backfire on your reputation.
