| I am doing some small 4x4 oil paintings using water mixable oils. I don't plan on framing them, do I need to put varnish or some protectant over them? If yes, what type is recommended and how long should I wait before varnishing. |

I wait 6 months like I do for oils. Due to water evaporating quicker, I probably don't have to wait that long. I like to be on the safe side. This gives me time to hang them up to evaluate.
I use Grumbacher. On the can you will see listed, gloss, damar varnish, final damar based varnish for oil painting. I spray and let it dry between each spray until I reach the coverage that I desire.
Note of interest, Grumbacher was recommended to us in college. many years ago. (samples do influence) I continue to use it. 2002 Sanford, made in the USA is stamped on the side of the can. I believe that I heard some years ago that Grumbacher was purchased by another company. I was not able to reach Sanford to verify this fact this weekend.
