I have just completed a large 30" x 40" painting on a commercially prepared stretched canvas, and have realized that the composition is greatly improved if I crop the painting to a 30"x 30" square. Has anyone successfully done this, and if so do you have any recommendations? Thanks!

Yep. It should be fairly easy but some prestretched canvas has clipped corners so you need to take your time and remove the canvas carefully. You need the new stretcher bars to be as thin (or thinner) than the old ones.

Make sure you have the new stretcher bars squared up so the painting fits well.

Don't overstretch the painting when you are putting it on the new stretchers. In fact you don't really need to stretch at all. Just be gentle and take your time. That's my main advice.

There are quite a few artists who tack canvas on the wall, or floor, decide what part they want to keep, and then stretch that part. Why not?
