Indian Yellow is transparent.

Hey MSHa,

Just wrapped up what's been some of the most frustrating work on a painting and I was remembering your question all the while... saw it days ago but didn't reply. (Uh, maybe some type of karmic something or other because I didn't? Nevermind... )

Today was frustrating because the yellows I latched onto were transparent and weren't covering like they should've - at least not according to the paint labels...

Some manufacturers use symbols on their tubes of paint to indicate opacity through to transparent. Check your tubes of paint; then your art supply store again.

If not, and you're using acrylic, an acrylic gel is sold that can be mixed with your yellows to make 'em transparent. Now that gel is whitish straight out of the tube, and becomes crystal clear only after it dries, so you might just have some trouble judging how transparent you've gotten your mixture until after it dries. Worth a shot anyway.

If you're using oils, there are various premixed mediums you can use to dilute your yellows, making them transparent, or you can use one of the various forms of linseed oil.

Back to acrylics... I've found that both Liquitex and Talens (Van Gogh) are making tints that are right-on as far as the various skin tones. And just adding a brown or black will darken 'em to help you shade; another color to help you add reflected light.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

Jeff
