I've browsed the internet to try to find some type of clarification by
what is meant by a painting's "technical flaws," (mentioned quite a bit
without clarification on websites where competition entry winners and
losers are discussed). I haven't been able to find anything other than
what common sense would tell you - ill-stretched canvas or cracking
paint - that type of thing.
Circles and Squares (See attached photo showing a detail of the painting posted in 'Art Clinic' taken before it was finished.)
My burning question is this... when I paint, I often use my finger to
help with shading, wiping paint away from the canvas surface to blend
or lessen the intensity of the color I'm applying, (the blue squares).
Now, I'm relatively certain this isn't a 'technical flaw,' but what
about where a semi-transparent paint is applied and it doesn't quite
cover, like in the red semi-circle at the bottom, within the red
circles, or along the geese's back just below the red line.
I've corrected some of these areas in paintings but sometimes the
resulting solid-color shapes don't look right and the painting seems to
take on a 'posterized' effect.
Am I using good painting techniques or are we talking technical flaws here?
(The arrow points to a pencil line drawn so I could get good placement
and a line to follow for the neck... also apparent in some of the
roughishness of the beak.)
Lacking formal training, I sure would appreciate some help with this.
Cheers!
Jeff

| P.S. Sorry... the red semi-circle no longer shows - cut-off when I had to resize the photo for posting. |

| I am inclined to think it would be, inaccurate perspective, inconsistant lighting, even proportion scale. Along with the elements of design being out of whack. Don't know for sure, just a guess. |
