When I work in oils, my only extras I use is a copal, and thats at the end for a luster over the entire painting...
When I draw, I use only the pencil...
When I draw with colored pencil I again use no extras.
There are products at the art supply stores, That I have no idea what they are for.
I hear artist talk of masking, and gessos...?
I am at a loss, even mounting a drawing, ignorant, I am a self-taught artist and my works are pretty good, but as a self-taught it's all heart, hand and eye, and the surface.  Alot of time I work so long and so hard on something and the get to the presentation stage and thats as far as it goes...I start a new piece and the finished ones stack up.
Here is a sample of my work.

Use the pointy end............

You must love being by yourself, in the woods, for hours...and hours...and hours. This "sample" would take me about a month. Looking at this piece makes me wish I could put down my paints and pick up my pencils. Your are a gifted artist. Put this intense focus on a portrait and you would never have to go to work again.

First, that's fantastic work! I had the same issues being mostly self taught, then I started asking questions like you! It took some experimenting with art "supplies" to figure a lot of it out. Gesso is used for underpainting, or preparing the surface of a canvas. For drawings there are spray fixatives that protect or keep the drawings from being smeared. There several types of coatings for the various media. I think the best way to see thier use is try the products as you need them. Usually art supply store sales people can tell what's the best product to use and for what purpose. I'm in my second year at art school and there's been no discussion of what to use to enhance art? I've been drawing for 39 years and trial and error still works for me! Your talent is definitely worth saving! I hope this helps!
