| I would like to change and re-paint an acrylic picture on canvas. It has been varnished with Liquitex matte varnish.
How can I remove the varnish so as to permit adding new acrylic paint? |

Hi Dorothy,
When I decide to re-paint on a canvas I usually cover the old paint with colored gesso, take care to sand the surface before. But the result could vary if you had a lot of texture on the first painting. For my part, I don't use a lot of pigment when I paint with acrylic, then it is very easy to cover with one layer.
A few years ago I had to remove a coat of varninsh, but it was not a Liquitex varnish, I think it was Stevenson varnish and I found on internet that we could use a mix of water with Amonia, the result was ok. After this experience I changed my varnish for Liquitex.
Good luck,

Hello, Dorothy,
If you have the October issue of The Artist's Magazine, check out the "Ask the Experts" column on page 78. You'll find Michael Skalka's addresses a similar issue in the second Q&A.
