This seems like a silly question and to many it probably is, but I've been painting in oil for almost 10 years now and I still haven't figured it out. Here goes.
What's up with brush sizes? At first I thought that maybe the sizes differed with the type of brush or with the brand. But there is obviously more to it than that.
In recent years I've decided that I like the Kolynsky Royal Sable brushes and I often order them from Jerry's catalogue. The last time I ordered I paid very close attention to the number written on the brush I was holding and order the same number so that I could get a new brush just like the one I had. When they arrived they were totally different....
Okay... so I'm a slow learner... How are brushes "sized". Why is a 10 not a 10? Does it depend on whether it's a filbert or a flat or a long handled brush versus a short handled brush. What's the deal?
Thanks for solving the puzzle for me! |

I have been told, there is no industry standard for brush sizes and their numbers.

Here's what I know... It DEFINETLY depends on the type of brush! A #1 in a flat is diffrent than a #1 filbert, sable as opposed to nylon, oil as opposed to watercolor and so on. Unfortunately, MSHa is correct, there is no standard for brush sizes in like brush tyoes for different makers. Also, as with everything else in our world today, time between buying dictates changes. That is, that you might get a different sized brush from the same maker if you were to buy a week, month or year later. This is due to economics such as material, labor and other costs that the maker passes on to the consumer in smaller products....remember how the canned food industry changed it's sizes instead of marking up prices???? So, if you bought a #10 Creative Mark filbert last week and you buy one today, they might be different... Mike |
