This painting was photographed by a professional and didn't come out very well.  I entered it in a competition and was not accepted.  Would appreciate any comments as to whether it can be salvaged or should I paint it over again.

Samsart, I like your painting, what meduim is it. You should not let the fact that it is not approved be your measurement of standards, I had the same experience with one of mine and i know it is a good painting. This looks like acrylics and your atmosphere is right, light and dark is niceley contrasted so I think it is good work.

I recommend for you to keep it as future reference and educational purposes. In my journey as an artist, it helps to look back at old works and discover areas where I can improve. I applaud you for welcoming criticism, it's a true test of a man's willingness for higher learning. You're on the right tack.

With regards to this paitning, the farthest objects should have the illusion of distance where detaills are not easily distinguished. You did great on the jars, but the little vase and the girl were too distinct that it took away the viewer's focus from your focal point, which is the burning flame. Your composition & idea were terrific though.

Keep on practicing and enjoy the process. Although you didn't make it for the competition, acknowledge it as a learning experience. Beauty is in the eye of beholder. My award-winnig pieces were oftentimes the ones I least expect that will make it. My husband often reminds me, do your best...God will do the rest.

Hi Samzart, My questions is: Is the fire or the woman and her actions the focal point of your painting here? I cannot tell. When I put my hand to cover the fire, immediately my eyes saw the child sitting in the upper corner, whereas I'd not noticed her before at a ll. Then, so quickly and evenly, my eyes went back to the woman, slowly over the jars, onwards to the child and back to the pan on the floor, and then to the woman again. A wonderful pathway!!! So, I suggest that the fire be lowered in value to a rich reddish-orange, and then see what happens!! Also, if the logs and wood ash were darkened, they would take their places better. I love the painting without the brightness of the fire. Sincerely, Colors

The name of  this painting is "Smithy", done in watercolor on Arches 300# paper. The image is about 21x 29.
