Title: Stiffnecked Garlic

I worked hard on the composition of this piece, and would appreciate feedback on the results. Feedback on other aspects will be appreciated, too.

Thanks!

You did a good job with the rendering of the wholes and pieces of garlic and the composition is nice and balanced and everything tends to make you want to study the little grooves in the bulbs or clusters (don't know the terms for pieces of garlic) but that's where I'd like to see more. I'm sorry I can't exactly give a solution but I think it needs more richness in the shadows and I like the small tinges of yellow you applied to the highlighted areas because it reflects the presence of light. Whether or not it was just coincidence or intent, I think the dark background was an excellent choice, kind of looks like the texture of velvet, and I think that it plays off the garlic to kind of give the viewer a sense of luxury.

Thanks! The dark background was by intent. Still life backgrounds are often a problem for me. I'm so focused on the main subject that I almost forget the need for a subtly interesting background. I changed the color of this background several times. I added the yellow in the highlights because the whole thing seemed very cold at first, and the yellow helped warm it up a little. Thanks for the suggestion about more detail. I see what you mean.
